Cars Owned:

  1. Rather than have multiple threads I thought I would merge my car and its progress into one thread. I'll have lots of questions as I progress but I hope I can start to answer a few questions as well. So, I bought this car via an online auction through Trade Classics, a little wary as I was unable to visit the car the pictures and videos displayed a very honest seller and a car that had been used but also maintained. More importantly it had also been garaged for the 36 years of ownership. The car was delivered with social distancing in place, again very odd although this will be the fourth car I
  2. Hi all, I’ve been trying to contact Ben to order a new Surrey backlight, but unfortunately can’t get hold of him. Does anyone know him personally so they can pass on my details? Many thanks
  3. Hello All: I’m looking for a recommendation for someone to give a TR3a chassis a light blast and a coat of decent primer somewhere in Surrey / South West London. Any thoughts appreciated! Cheers, Ben
  4. Free if collected Or postage cost added Otter Switch Push in for TR7/8, Lotus, Jaguar. 2 genuine Otter Brand, one replacement item. Both Otter items were new from Triumph. Rating 91 87. All unused They are the push in type of thermostatic switch for TR7/8 with a/c Radiator cooling fan switch for MGB pt no URP1126 or BHM7285 Radiator cooling fan on Lotus Elite and Eclat. Radiator/air con fans Jag XJ12 and probably E Type. My brother ran one for years in his TR2. Drilled a hole on the header tank and inserted, to control his electric cooling fan.
  5. Hi The previous owner used the foam tubing (all along the length of the Surrey top) an example of the width as seen in the photos, this did stop any water getting in in the front corner but pushed the door glass outwards leaving a big gap where the glass in the door meets the Surrey top on the side not the roof so water could get in there. I temporarily used a length of U shaped rubber but I want do a better job Can anyone advise which profile of a foam seal they used on the front corners. The photo shows daylight which I wish to make watertight.
  6. Hi All just starting to fit my Surrey soft top and I’m struggling to work it all out, could someone post a video or send me a link to one that shows how the front lip goes in. Does it just push under the front capping? Cheers Mark
  7. There are a few on the market. Which one is the best value for money?
  8. Are header rails different?
  9. Different header bar plate I'm afraid Peter. The TR4 (ONLY) has the Surrey top (the soft foldable centre section) with an insewn 3 piece thin steel tab in the material along the front edge. This pushes under the leading edge of the header bar plate, if there's space. The TR4a has the soft top over centre buckles with the location piece to fix to on the rear of the top windscreen frame, and the TR250-TR6 has the header plate securing ...using "plunge" cam handles that go into the header bar (same as on the Stag). The TR4a and the TR5/6 versions are a lot more "secure," some of th
  10. Hello Stuart, I have a surrey top now, and have removed the steel roof having bought a used "H" Frame and soft top from Craig at bits. the soft top front lip, that should go under the header rail, doesn't want to play, there seems not enough room for it to tuck under?
  11. Hello All - I am buying a 1959 TR3A from another member. It currently has the reg AAX89A but I believe it was originally registered 493KPA, and I and researching information to enable me to reassign its original number. What I know so far from various searches and contacts, is that it has build date 23/1/1959 and was delivered new to dealership L.F.Dove of Wimbledon. Wimbledon was in Surrey then (before the formation of the GLC). The reverse KPA series of registration numbers was also issued in Surrey in 1959. Both DVLA and a previous owner agree that it was registered AAX89A in 198
  12. Hi folks, has anybody seen this https://www.historics.co.uk/buying/auctions/2024-05-11/cars/ref-24-1966-triumph-tr4a-irs-surrey-top-sb/ My good mate is interested. I spotted a couple of howlers but what have I missed. I think it is a bit on the dear side. Roger
  13. Does anyone have a set of instructions for fitting a surrey top? I have recently bought a surrey top set to fit to my TR5 but it didn't come with instructions. Before i start drilling the rear frame and windscreen frame i want to make sure the holes are in the right place etc etc even some photos of where the fixings go would be great. Many thanks in advance Clem
  14. Hi All. I’m looking for a windscreen capping, it’s the one for the Surrey top soft top that slides in with the poppers on the sides. There are two numbers 808231 and 806189. I’ve ordered 806189 but it doesn’t look right, I’m wondering if it was put in the wrong bin ? cheers Mark
  15. Ok, enough of the boring pre-rally ****. Let's get to it. What follows now is our impressions of the rally, day by day - in each case the post will start with my report followed by Jan's. Remember that these were written at the end of each day, sometimes shortly after parking up and checking into that night's hotel; sometimes after a bite to eat and a beer or two. One more reminder: Jan had never done ANY rallying before... Day 1 (Kirkland, WA > Quesnel, BC; ~480 miles/770 km): The day started early with all competitors milling around in the parking lot chatting ne
  16. Hi Hamish, I have entered the Championship, hopefully my first rounds shall be in the 7 at the double header at Doune in May. Unfortunately the number of TR Register Hillclimbers competing at Doune would appear to be well down on those who competed last year, hopefully there shall be a last minute rush of TR entries. I may even have to double enter my 3 with the 7 to keep the numbers up. Cheers, Cliff
  17. Pete, I have a spare TR5/6 front header bar if you want to go down that route and some spare locking handles Rgds David
  18. The capping strips were covered in topic "Surrey top fixing hooks" Nov 16th 2018. I attached photos of the different capping strips in one of my replies. Sorry I can't see how to link directly to the topic from here Keith
  19. See if Craig has a good s/hand Surrey capping Pete thats what I got for my 250 and its a lot better fit for the front of the Surrey. Stuart.
  20. Ok, so before we get into the actual daily reports let me give you a little background of how we ended up in the Alcan 5000, what the rally actually IS and information about the car. Then we'll get into the meat of it... Introduction: It all seemed pretty straight-forward when I first suggested to my girlfriend Jan that we attempt the Alcan 5000 rally. Sure, it’s 4,500 miles (7,200 km) in only nine days in some pretty remote parts of Canada and Alaska, but Jan and I LOVE being in our 53-year-old TR4 (it was 53-years old back then - now it's almost 63), driving it all over the back-
  21. Several different types depending on model and whether its a soft top or Surrey equipped car. Stuart.
  22. Racetorations do the windscreen stay you are mentioning https://www.racetorations.co.uk/product/windscreen-top-rail-brace-tr2-3a/
  23. Hi all, last weekend the radiator on my TR3 developed a leak from the filler extension neck - manifested itself as a fine spray of coolant over the right-hand front wing (and my hand). It was rebuilt by Cheltenham radiators a few years ago, but unfortunately, the chap has now retired. I called a friend who suggested West Mercia Radiators in Wednesbury (not far from IKEA on the M6 near Birmingham/Walsall). I took the radiator to them today and I had a fully repaired radiator within the hour. Apparently the neck had a minute crack that went all around the join with the header tank. Th
  24. It can depend on how the body is fitted (Amount of shims) as to whether it will touch or not , my overflow pipe just rubs on the front cross re-enforcer on my car because its a water pipe to the header tank unlike a thin overflow pipe, not enough to worry about but theres a definite rub mark. Stuart.
  25. Last year I sent my steering column to a special engineering business. They were recommended as a high quality company. The column was overhauled at some cost and now has instructions not to alter the adjustment. It has taken over nine months to fit it in the TR. Luckily I had a reasonable one in the car for the last ten years It works well while driving but the steering wheel is not quite horizontal, which is probably me and a friend fitting issue. But when parking or trying a three point turn the steering is much too firm. I have tried a few miles now and it is not improving. The overh
