len1
I am almost ready to start assembling my chassis with all suspension bits. I keep looking at the trailing arms which have been blasted,,,but am unsure if i should paint them silver or leave alone.....What is normally done bare or painted ? RogerH
Hi Len, painting them will reduce the onset of corrosion from winter salted roads etc. Roger
John Bracher
Hi Len Agree with Roger, once mine were blasted, I gave them a good 'doing over' in clear laquer. There are some good tough ones avalaible, I forget which make I used, but went for a satin/semi gloss finish. I did inside the bush mounting holes too, before fitting the bushes. DaveN
+1 I had mine blasted then I used Deoxidene 624 insîde and out, thoroughly flushed out, then alocrom 1000. Then I went for silver powder coat (an alloy wheel repair specialist ) finally copious amounts of Socopac and LPS 3 on the internals before installing new bungs. I did take a peek inside with a borescope and was surprised at how clean and corrosion free they were, not confined to just one set either. I have some others too.. ed_h
Practically, I don't believe any coating is really necessary, but aesthetically, a little sprucing up and a coat of tough silver paint or powder coat goes a long way. Ed
DaveN
+1 Ed. Only did go OTT because I could! Must be habit with working with aluminium aircraft structures! Edited July 22, 2017 by DaveN
ShaunC
Powder coat silver which is what we've done with the Stag. You'll need to mask up the areas where the bushes go. Or try a few light coats of Eastwood 'Aluma blast' spray paint which i used when I refurbished my gearbox.....the only downside is that it's a bit champagne colour like when offered up to a silver. Clarkey
Hi Len When I did mine a couple of years ago, I had them soda blasted then I used compressed air to get rid of the dust(dust mask and goggles needed)Sprayed them with silver smoothrite, they came out a treat Edited July 23, 2017 by Clarkey

Denis
I always used to wire brush mine until the Wax Oil man made an executive decision that they looked better sticky Wax-Oil black!!! BAH!

BAH! Same here- just wasted a considerable time with hot air gun and wire cup (local shot blasters shut down at present) getting off signal red overspray, overlayed with black stonechip followed by a topping of black waxoyl! Would have got powder coated but as everywhere is shut down it will have to be silver smooth hammerite as that's all I've got and there seems no no end to the covid shut down and I've got lots to do and need the hoist free for other jobs
Peter V W
When you paint trailing arms it will make it harder to see any defects.
Z320
No paint on mine to see any cracks as good as possible. I recommend not to powder coat anything that you may have to weld anytime in the future.

Waxoyl on the outside is a waste of time. However these things are hollow. Take the bung off and look inside. Is it full of white powder I got mine Alcrom 1200 coated on the inside to seal the surface. If this is not possible then apply Waxoyl or Dinitrol on the inside only. Andy Moltu
My mentioning the waxoyl was more of "what possessed you" thought to the previous owner. I powder costed the ones on the 6. As for hiding cracks - the trailing arms are pretty robust in normal use - many (most) ot the ones that break seem to be related to to after market telescopic conversions that allow the damper to hit maximum compression before the bump stop makes contact and thus failing pretty obviously. Not sure if the rarer failures justify the "don't paint" need.

Markus
Some considerable time ago I had mine blasted and powder coated clear. Not obvious but very easy to keep clean. Cheers!
