Richmac
Whilst under my car replacing the clutch slave cylinder I'm also changing my gearbox oil and cleaning out the overdrive filter. When putting back the overdrive filter with new gasket should I use a sealant on it or will a smear of oil suffice please. Regards Richard
james christie
It will smear itself with oil, doesn’t need your help. Getting the overdrive plug oil-tight can be a lifetime’s challenge….. james
Richmac
Thanks James I'll just replace dry I guess and hope for the best
Waldi
I used silicone sealant, but equally important is to use a proper tool for tightening to achieve good gasket compression. For this, I ordered a spanner from Revington, it has one handle. If it would have 2 handles, that would be even better because you could apply “pure torque” like with the double handled wire wheel nut spanners. Waldi.

Waldi
I don’t know Stuart, and I needed several parts from Neil, so for me this was definitely the cheapest option. Customs- and shipping cost would almost triple the price of the tool, thank you Brexit. Waldi

Drewmotty
These are nice: https://www.bighealey.co.uk/overdrive-drain-plug-socket-ovd174t I might have a go at making one with a 1/2” drive for a socket set. BlueTR3A-5EKT
Some of us have a hexagonal drive plug. It requires 7/16” whit box spanner held in place by a jack
ianc
The tool for the Boston Squealy is more than twice the price of the excellent tool from Overdrive Repairs - a tool which I have here. But, TRs are the poor relation, I suppose. Ian Cornish
Ian Vincent
A search for overdrive drain plug spanners will come up with a C spanner costing £6.95 from Ahead for A-H. Rgds Ian

Off course, I considered making my own, but I do not have a milling machine, so choose the easy way;) Cheers, Waldi
Lebro
I bought one of these oil filter removing tools, & find that it makes a very good O/D drain plug remover, the 3 arms pull in as you use it, & grip on 3 of the 6 notches on the plug with out slipping. Bob Good idea and at least you are getting some value out of the thing because they are no good for taking the oil filter off on a TR - there isn’t enough room to use them. Ask me how I know.
