Ignition - all you ever wanted to know (& probably more)

Recommended Posts

A very interesting and comprehensive paper, thanks for the link Bob. I do notice he just talks about the spark energy from the different systems. OK it isn't the stated aim but the paper says nothing about whether there is any real benefit in terms of power developed on the road, as opposed to the bench tests he performs on just the ignition system. For the run-of the mill road TR4 with its 'agricultural' engine.....I wonder whether it would really make much difference?

There's a whole load of other interesting stuff on the website he links to on page 5.

Hi Roger,

His website address hasn't altered. He did a series of articles in TRAction a few years ago which was where I got the O/D controller circuit from. It cost me less than a tenner to make it.

In my opinion the improvement of the ignition makes sense

because older systems could not work like the Physics would request.

The main problem ist that the ignition coil needs for a small time an electric

pulse to build up the magnetic field that delivers the high tension when it

breakes together.

Related to a defined angle of each crank rotation this time will be longer

at low revs what heats unnecessarily the coil and what will be shorter at

high revs what may not "fill" the coil completely.

This can easily be corrected with modern electronics and worth a look at.

But I prefer to use it as a black box and fit and forget.

The rest like free programmable ignition mapping is a nice add on and a

very good idea when engine is modified or distributor is worn or other

circumstances like fuel quality enforce a modification.

Hotter cams will make the original part throttle advance a bit weak.

One of the problems is the range of time the constant the coil has to work over. i.e long at low rpm to short at high rpm, its a compromise. Like many of the shortcomings of the earlier ignition systems these can be designed out in modern vehicle systems and as a result this will improve engine efficiency and reduce pollution.

It has to be a compromise which most of us accept in our older vehicles for maybe originality and simplicity. Easier, cheaper and quicker to fix. That is providing the repro parts are up to it!

Just my thoughts,

Dave

One of the best ways t, up yer IGN is to fit uprated parts,

there a few choices like

Hollow plug leads, thee,s save weight,

and must be the ultimate sparky plug,

dont forget, ye will need to clean yer plug wires too, as a dutty plug wire really saps power, :P:D

Peter, are you saying the Kale Co items are just cheap Chinese copies of the German items you have linked to?.

I want to get this right as it might affect the product's elligiblability for TR Gold. - should I wish to propose it.

Sorry OP this is off topic.
