2011 - the TR4's 50th Birthday!

Recommended Posts

As all you TR4 owners will realise, we will be celebrating 50 years of the TR4 in 2011. Hurrah!

Have you any suggestions as to what special features/displays/events should be set up at the International Weekend (in Harrogate) to commemorate this?

And, since there's no reason why, having made a suggestion, you shouldn't be prepared to help make it happen, please let us know what you might be able to do (or, if you don't wish to break cover, send me a personal e-mail at ifcornish@btinternet.com).

It would help if you could state your location in the UK, or wherever - why should we be parochial about this, there are many keen owners of TR4s in Europe.

Better try and find a TR4 door to do my lead filling demo on for that one then ;)

Hi Ian,

I'll be there most probably. Lady Ann can make a show of all the stupid things you can do on a TR4 when you've owned it for 40 years. Yes, 2011 will be my 40th anniversary with the dreaded lump.

On other grounds, I am willing to participate in dancing if Sat nite disco is replaced by a Morris dance.

Badfrog, salt of the earth, really....

Alec - sounds like the glass half full versus glass half empty business!

Good to hear that you, too, have had your TR4 for 40 years, "and it don't seem a day too long!" as the song has it.

A friend who has a Morgan as well as a TR tells me that the difference in the clubs is that all the TR folks are in the same boat, so we mix well and support one another. Many of those who have a new Morgan regard those with old ones as freaks or people from another planet - so no real camaraderie. He thinks ours is the better club. Oh, and he thought the celebration of Morgan's Centenary was pretty pathetic compared with even an ordinary TR International.

Ah no Ian, can't see any half empty glasses . . . . ;)

TRs passed into history 30 years ago, but at least they're still living history . . . . which may or may not prove or disprove Henry Ford's supposed adage that 'history is bunk', or words to that effect.

The colonial runt may have killed TR production, but he didn't kill the marque.

Cheers,

Alec

Viv,

for Morris dancing you need a stick, pigs bladder, handkerchief and a glass of beer :) .

It doesn't matter too much which order things get used.

It also helps to dress up in some of the missus clothes (stockings - usuually white, hat/bonnet and maybe a blouse) .

To get into action you wave your handkerchief, whack you stick against something/body, jump up and down and drink the beer (they call it dancing)

The pigs bladder is for later. :o

A bucket to go with the stick comes in handy for Maypole mettyfors and such. Remote Pennine and Cornwalls areas have some traditions of doing it in the altogether but I'll have to excuse myself there. A man of my age ......

Nevertheless, I'll stick with my idea of coming to Harrington for some show n' tell, with a twist. Plus the official distance record unless the Aussies make it.... Giving a hand of some sorts is also a definite possibility, like rounding up french TR owners. I expect a couple might do the trip.

More than a few TR4s have been used successfully in motor sport during 50 years, perhaps some of those cars that remain could be gathered into a display, along with photographic displays and some results/achievements from period competition down the years ?

I can recall numerous discussions about the significant evolutions during the production of the TR4, perhaps some of these component/specification changes could be highlighted by examples of the cars, and of the earlier and later components gathered together in sequence ?

There must have been dozens of road tests written in period, and hundreds of subsequent magazine buyers guides and suchlike, selections of which could be copied into display folders for general perusal, preferably enlarged from A4 to A3 format for ease of reading in the halls . . . . .

Another interesting display might be the range of tuning and go-faster accessories available for the TR4, current and period, assembled into some sort of priority order with recommendations as to the most cost-effective order of fitment for TR4 enhancement.

How's that for starters, Graham ?

No, I'm not volunteering, I don't have a TR4 !

Cheers,

Alec

Hi Graham,

the forum don't do novel it's too much like reading  .

Seriously though things may not take shape within the forum but snippets make there way back to group meetings and fester upwards generally turning into something worthwhile. B)

Many things about the TR4 have been said and done but I'm sure the might of the TR Reg will win through again. :)

Or how about a 'bring and buy' section set aside specifically for TR4 items only ?

Together with a TR4 giant notice board such that all 4 owners could post details of specific 'wants', or items that they would be happy to exchange rather than sell outright ?

Or a display of components now NLA, to encourage all and sundry to check out their own garage hoards for any of these rare items to assist others with their TR4 rebuilds ?

Or a suppliers' discount scheme with an extra 10%, for example, solely for TR4 owners attending with their cars and purchasing (or ordering) TR4 items on site?

The more TR4 spares on site the more incentive for TR4 owners to attend . . . .

Cheers,

Alec

And another one, for TR4s attending only . . . . the driver pays admission, the passenger has free entry for the weekend. That might tip the balance for a few potential attendees, and swell the numbers. Even those who usually attend solo may be encouraged to bring a wife, girlfriend or buddy along ? :D

Cheers,

Alec

A) What about ( as I see Alec has just mentioned ) a series of displays / gatherings of Standard Road, Modified and full out competition cars.

B)Do the Harrogate town guys want to sponsor anything. A series of awards. A get together or run out / parade in the town. May also help to get some extra visitors.

C) Prior to the event, why not try and get a TR4 gallery on the Register site - current register or forum members and their cars.

E) How long have people had their TR4's...by some miracle anyone for 50 years.

F) Get some leading restorers to give a talk about waht can be done to improve the cars.

I don't know any details of the venue, but does that lend itself to anything in particular

What a :) BRILLIANT :) idea Alec. I can see this being taken further into the future for different Marques and what a way to get the youngsters

there and interested.

Quite a number of the Yoof attended solo . . . . maybe there should be a concession for TR drivers aged under 30 - their passenger also aged under 30 gets free admission. That ought to guarantee every Yoof car carrying a passenger for the party !! Come to which, the same concession could apply to ALL Triumph drivers under 30, to encourage attendance from amongst the younger small chassis and saloon owners . . . . anything which lowers the average age of the participants has to be a good thing.

And another innovation, an auction of TR4 rarities only, that could spice up Sunday for example ? Or even Friday evening ? Too much happens Saturday, there should be more incentive to arrive Friday and stay on for Sunday.

Many of the overseas visitors to whom I've spoken over the years would appreciate camping being available from Thursday afternoon, to allow an extra day for catching up and socialising - another innovation worth consideration.

A comprehensive display of TR4 advertising and PR material from around the world would be interesting to more than just the TR4 brigade, maybe overseas collectors could be persuaded to loan items to the Registrar for such a one-off display ?

Cheers,

Alec

Wouldn't it be novel if anyone ever took a Forum request seriously ....

GRAHAM ROBSON

Sorry Graham,

I WILL come and WILL show 'n tell whatever interests folks in my car, good examples being the perfect heigth difference between front and rear of the car, oil vapours recovery, cooling, SU carb modifications, distributor optimisation and car beheading.....

I WILL try to round up french TR owners and WILL eventually do a Morris dance if requested. The memoirs of 40 years with Lady Ann are available for use as legends, captions and all sorts of written use in the advertising of the event.

I was absolutely serious in the facts if not in the words. A usual manner for me. I don't believe enjoying classic TRs should impose a scottish presbyterian (or popish, your choice) composure.

We're all old kids playing with old toys, aren't we?

Cheers,

Badfrog, more to it than .....

Good ideas Alec,

The first one might be well illustrated by inviting Kas Kastner / Bob Tullius with a TR4 from group 44.

Second one, there are so many books... I could bring my library of TR matters, both french and english, for show.

Third one, as for very good and dreadfully bad improvements, I have quite a few I can show.

BTW, I do have a TR4

Cheers,

Agree Alec, good one.

I've often thought of some concession for the IWE for 'extras'. Besides the fact that my good lady wouldn't be seen dead in a tent (there's no en-suite  ) it does work out very pricy when bringing the other half along......

On another note, if we're to have TR4 special seminar/events, it would be good if they were advertised a bit better. For example, Stuarts Lead Loading demo/seminar was on the noticeboard as "Watermill". If I hadn't read the forum, I wouldn't have known what it was and might have missed it. As it was, I thoroughly enjoyed it and was pretty much awe-struck. Fabulous Stuart - I'd like to see it again in 2011!!

If were definately in Harrogate next year, have we got a date yet? I really enjoyed my first IWE this year and want to get my holiday in the works calendar for next year :) as I'm going to take the Friday off work and head north on the Friday morning ..... before the Friday afternoon M1 rush out of the South.

Badfrog - looking forward to seeing Lady Ann too. I missed the Forum Meet Up this year through not paying attention to my watch :(

Cheers,

Bri.

Mal asked "E) How long have people had their TR4's...by some miracle anyone for 50 years ?"

We have an original owner named Tom in our Montreal TR club who has had his since 1967.

I've owned my 1958 TR3A for 52 years from new.

Thanks for the info Tony, Roger and Badfrog.

Made a start on the Morris Dance - nearly perfected the drink more beer bit.

Getting serious, love 'em or loathe 'em, an anniversary eye opener would be a display of all the hairy chested TR4's with V8's dropped in.

Viv.

PS Badfrog, does the "Last Tango in Paris" remain a popular dance in the city of romance ?,.
