Angled Speedo Drive

Hi AlanG,

if AlanT does not come up trumps then Moss do have good ones in stock.

Having said that if you buy it over the counter take it out of its packet and test it -

pull the drive out and rotate, make sure the teeth stay engaged/no binding. Apply pressure to the drive and do the same.

 

Don't forget to install the copper washer.

 

I have also found that if the tolerances of the pinion square hole and drive square shaft are against you it may be difficult to fit/engage.

It may be worth removing your pinion and take it with you to the shop for atrial fit.

The trick is to drive it from the "speedo" side. If the gears are poorly cut/fitted then it will jam.

 

I don't have any free stock of repaired ones at present.

So I can't give you a quick turnaround.

 

If you buy a Moss one then I may be interested to buy your old one.

Just checked my stock.

 

I have one with a loose wire that I could fix quite easily.

It depends on whether you like the solid square-section instead of a flexy-wire.

 

I sold one like this to a fellow forumite a few months back. I'll try to remember who it is.

This poor thing came to me from a forumite.

 

It was in bits, missing a circlip, worn out thrust washer and had been taken out because the wire-stub was rotating in the bevel-gear.

 

These repro-drives seek to avoid the tricky crimping, used by Smiths, by spot-welding the wire-stub directly to the gear.

High carbon content, large mass and soft-iron wire don't make a good welding proposition.

 

You can see here that I have knocked the weld out of the gear:

and then fitted a brass-plug carrying a square central hole:

This is a press-fit and stud-lock combination.

 

Making one such brass part would be a pain but I made a batch of 12 and this means the labour required per part is not so bad.

Never mind how I do the square hole!

 

Here reassembled with a new thrust-washer, cilclip and suitable lubrication, it now runs nicely.

Note the solid central stub is made from easily replaced 3mm steel and is retained only by a small O-ring.

There are lots of different part-numbers for these.

 

PM me and I'll email you a list of vehicles and numbers.

 

One issue that may be important is the length of the wire-stub that sticks out.

You might get a marginal connection or buckle up the wire.

 

Just look into this a bit and satisfy yourself.

 

I suppose its also possible they have different ratios which would screw up the calibration.

The gear box ones are normally 1:1 geared, some cars also have one at the speedo end too.

Just what you want. Two of these dodgy things to go wrong.

 

Seriously the fit of the wires into the recess in these is quite marginal.

They form the "square" by squeezing in four dimples. Some are better formed than others.

 

Then the whole wire-stub thing is fragile. They are not spring steel, they are iron wire and pretty soft.

Lots of the broken ones have the wire-stub torn off where they are fixed into the gear.

 

I believe they get torn off when reversing, judging by the lay of the wires.

Today I've found another old, original angle drive in my stock (with torn wire-stub), obviously to late for Stoneleigh 2015 !

Is AlanT still around and selling these or can anyone suggest the best place where to acquire one?

Bit of a nightmare i have had. One of the first things i did when i bought the car last year was to fit a new overdrive gearbox from Pete Cox. The speedo never worked from day 1 so bought a second hand one which i had recommissioned. I was down near Alicante recently with my mechanic doing a lot of little jobs. We tested the speedo and new cable (using a drill) before fitting it to the dash but forgot to test it again before putting the car back together. First test drive and the new speedo wasn't working. By this time i was already two days late getting home and didn't have the time (or desire) to take the H frame etc out again to have a look. My mechanic recons it is the angle drive that has gone even though it was a new one that came from Cox with the gearbox (120694 + 3H550 Angle Drive + washer)

I am not a mechanic myself but i think i can manage to take the seats and H frame etc out again on my own. So i should be able to change the angle drive myself if this is what the actual problem is. Any suggestions of anything else to check before going ahead and buying a new angle drive? Thanks, Richard

Hi Richard, this probably does not help a lot but maybe someone will jump in to give the right info.  As you i struggle with angle drives, I’m on the 3rd one in 3000 miles.  2 failed and i suspect the third one is on its way out because the speed is too low by 20%.  I do have a new one that looks like a square box, i will take a picture tomorrow.  I do not recall where i bought it, but it was expensive and supposed to be The solution.   the 3 I had failed were ordered by my mechanic, so i suspect they come from Moss or Rimmer.

I bought one off a seller on ebay, happy to say it is still going after 5000 miles or so.  Speedograph Richfield  have made their own which is a square boxy thing, have a look on their website.

Thanks Gents for your replies. Have just bought a NOS Smiths angle drive off Ebay for a decent price so will try and fit this and hopefully my new speedo will work once and for all! :)
