Thought I would post on here for the first time as I have just bought a 1960 TR3A. Back in the early 70’s I had a TR6 and while researching if it was still on the road, it was ! I came across the red TR3A and as they say the rest is history.

Purchased from TRGB, can’t recommend them enough, car is in excellent condition and a credit to its previous owner. I am based down in mid Hampshire and look forward to meeting other TR enthusiasts

Completely agree. TRGB are the only specialist who do a ramp inspection and photo the underside as part of their sales, that impressed me. The chassis is as good as the body and TRGB had known the car and worked on it for many years, in fact they have sold it three times, it has had 4 owners, all longterm . Has uprated steering box, alternator, electric fuel pump, new mohair hood, overdrive on 3rd and 4th and a full synchro gearbox, also a stainless Sports exhaust….a bit noisy !!

What has happened to overdrive on 2nd gear ?  Very useful as its ratio sits between 2nd and 3rd, which is very useful on hills, and one can exceed 60 mph with only one gear change.

Very early TR2s had o/d on top only.  Later TR2s and TR3 had overdrive on 2nd, 3rd and top.  TR4 and TR4A had all-synchro gearbox with overdrive on 2nd, 3rd and top.

The 6 pots used a different overdrive (J type, rather than A type), but it was on 3rd and top only.

You've answered yourself Ian - the car has a later all-synchro box so if that is from a '6 it has a J type.

I thought early TR6s had A type ODs? Not sure if they changed when CRs came in , but all CRs were definitely J types

As you can imagine still feeling my way a bit on this one, but as RobH mentions I think it has an all synchro gearbox from a TR4, need to check the comprehensive history file that came with car.

Correct Rich. My ‘69, CP, TR6 has an A type. Interestingly, my 3A had had a 6 A type installed in the past (and worked rather better than the one in my 6!).

The commission plate on my ‘58 3A shows that it was not originally filled with an O/D, however someone has fitted one in the intervening years. I checked the number when it was out of the car and can see that it is from a 4A with O/D in 2nd, 3rd and top. The good news is that it works too; which is more than I can say for the one in my ‘63 4 - a job for this winter perhaps.

Commission plate on car shows it had overdrive fitted as standard, and as others have said and I have now discovered it works on 2nd, 3rd and 4th
