marki
Hi As I'm replacing my water pump etc I am also replacing the rusty return pipe from the heater. I think I've read a post on fixing an olive onto the end of the pipe to stop the hose popping off. Question is what did they use ? I've tried a search and didn't have any joy. I've got some JB Weld thought that might do it. Any ideas ? Mark
Rodbr
What the hell did Olive ever do to you? Use plumbers solder and sweat it on with a blowlamp. Get the copper solder olive and not the compression type but you may have to search for one the right imperial size.
marki
Hi Rod The one I have is brass, so I could give it a go. Cheers Mark
Rodbr
Hi Mark, I think you can get pre- soldered ones that have a channel inside filled with solder. Remember to give the return pipe a good clean first and Tin it before you try.
marki
Would normal solder work on stainless ? Mark
Guest ntc
Mark There is no need for a olive. fit pipe mark it remove and sand with 80 grit.

Kevo_6
Hi Mark, I did what Neil said and it's been no problem.
RogerH
Hi Mark, if you used the mild steel pipe and have TRouble with Olive then you could simply solder a ring of copper wire around it - very easy. If you use Stainless steel then you will need some very fancy flux. Do as Neil says. Roger
foster461
Hi Mark, I did what Neil said and it's been no problem. Me too. I may have put some high temp thread locker on it as well for added insurance.
Dave Larnder
Hi Mark I don´t know what diameter you need but I have brass compression olives in 1/4¨Dia pipe and 5/16¨dia pipe. I used a 1/4¨for the fuel pipe where it enters the fuel pump, but that is copper pipe. Dave
marki
Thanks for the offer Dave, but I think I'll just give a bit of a seeing too with a bit of wet and dry. Cheers Mark
stillp
If you use Stainless steel then you will need some very fancy flux. Jenolite works quite well on stainless. It's the phosphoric acid content.
lynchpin
Hi You could fit a 15mm compression brass socket (straight connector ) to the pipe which would squash the olive onto it and then saw through the nut with cuts opposite to remove it, this would leave just the olive attached to the pipe..
