Nigel C Posted July 24, 2023 Report Share Posted July 24, 2023 I've found a plentiful supply of heat shielding....just walk your dog along any main road and pick up said material from the verge. It seems that most manufactures fix their heat shield panels for CAT's/silencers etc with steel torkx fixings which, over time corrode the ali away and they fall off. I am lucky there is a old fashion auto electrician (knows what hes doing and what he is talking about) lives in the next town. He checked the alternator and said I needed a new one. He showed me whilst I stood next to the car. He said you have 2 choices you can go down the road and buy from a major motor factors it will cost you approx £50.00 and be back to see me in 3 months as a guy with a escort did with none charging problems again, when the new alternator of the escort was stripped it fell in bits and full of chinese parts !!! or I will build you one uprated from 40 to 70 amps using quality parts it will cost you £75.00 you choose. It never missed a beat even running electric fuel pumps a big electric fan heater lights and spotlights at the same time.When I convert my car from Dynamo to alternator I will be going back to see him. If you buy of ebay scroll down even if it says a British company and right at the bottom of the add it will probably give you some unpronounceable name and address in China. What did Henry Ford say. There are many things out there that are cheap & nasty & it really annoys me that they try & hide the fact the item is originating from China. Been caught a couple of times like that when missing the Chinese connection, fortunately not on anything expensive. Some car items are so much junk & we have to be very wary of EBay sometimes. There is a whole heap of “cheap” parts sold at a vast mark up, often by well known suppliers. When they fail they simply claim that’s the first one they have had problems with! They rely on the fact that many TRs are little used by many/most owners. Either that’s deliberate or via lack of feedback. A bit like domestic LED lights: test them by having 100 lamps on for 1000 hours, one fails and claim they last 100000 hours. It’s selective interpretation of stats. All that has been demonstrated is that over 1000 hours of testing 1% will fail. It could be that after 1500 hours 90% will have failed. By 1500 hours of use most customers will have forgotten where they bought it from and when they bought it so no repercussions for vendor let alone the manufacturer. Ian Cornish I enquired of Revington concerning the heat shield and according to them they have none in stock and don't have any plans to reintroduce them. james christie Posted August 2, 2023 Report Share Posted August 2, 2023 (edited) Don’t despair, the heat-shield is a nice easy way in to home fabrication! I too had an original from Revington but with vibration the top bracket broke as did a later one so I made my own. As you can see it is attached at the top to an exhaust stud and in my case, further down to a bracket on the 4 branch manifold. I formed mine over a paint tin! Turns out if you hold the heatshield it all went away, must have been amplifying things that I'd rather not know about! I have now fitted with some sound deadening on the underside and engine is noise is all back to normal. as you can see, the usual fixing off the stud at the front and I used the rear dynamo fixing bracket hole to secure the bottom edge.
