Welcome to the forum "F" - do you have a name we can use, it is a bit friendlier that way?

If the problem also affects the temperature gauge as well as the fuel gauge it is possible the instrument voltage stabiliser has ceased to function.  If it is only the fuel gauge then possibly it has a bad power connection or the tank sender or the wiring to it is at fault.

Can you give more information as to the model of car (4 or 4A) and the symptoms of the fault?  What does the gauge show and does the needle move at all?  What happens to the gauge when you turn the ignition on and off?

Hi Terry,

you probably know that, but make sure you disconnect the battery before checking any connection behind the dashboard.

A lose cable can give a short cut....

Cheers,

Laurent

Check the circuit to the fuel sensor by shorting the wire at the sensor to earth.   The gauge should head straight for 'Full'!  You need an assistant as the short should not be held for more than a second or two!

Check the coolant sensor the same way.
