Steves_TR6
I’d flush the cooling system thoroughly whilst you are ‘in there’ Holts sell a two part flushing/neutralising product that i’ve had good results with. Be sure to flush the heater too. Steve
IanPatterson
That was my thoughts also. Thanks for the advice of Holts product.
Waldi
How do I know what the value of the Thermostat is? (Remember I am a newbie to the mechanics of the beast). Ian Ian, It is normally stamped on the thermostat, like 82 Cheers, Waldi
MilesA
By duct I presume the top hose? If so it looks new. Ian I am sure Roger is referring to the duct behind the radiator grille, surrounding the radiator that direct all the air towards and through the radiator. Without it, most air just whistles past the radiator reducing its cooling properties. Ask me how I know... Miles
IanPatterson
Ah.. Yes the duct is in place and in reasonable nick. Thanks Ian
IanPatterson
OK, I have got the digital thermometer and done the tests. The kit is very good, and as it has two probes its dead easy to measure top and bottom hose temperatures at the same time. Air temperature on the day 24/25degs. Temps below are top hose/bottom hose. Startup from cold, after a few minutes the temps were 67 / 52 driving short distance, temps 76 / 67 Cruising 65 mph @ 2700 revs 80 / 77 Stop and idle, 83 / 79 This is why I thought the car was running hot. The gauge is showing 3/4 hot when cruising / normal running.
IanPatterson
Missed the pic. Ian
Lebro
OK so now you know where the gauge reads for normal use, problem solved ! Good job, well done. That sounds like a useful bit of kit. Bob.
IanPatterson
Happy for other members to borrow - just the postal cost. I bought 3 metre leads so can have the kit in the car. Ian

stillp
That gauge reading looks fine. They aren't precision instruments! Pete
Peter Cobbold
Hello, I run my 4a on 4life coolant supplied by MG Owners club with a Revotec fan and bottom mounted controller, perfect, gauge read 70 degrees and only wavered in standing traffic, that was before I fitted Efi, while I was rooting about with the temperature feed (I needed one for Efi) I replaced my old sender, the gauge now reads a steady 75 degrees bit, and it is a big but, the ECU tells me the engine temp is 85 degrees, before I wasn't worried, now I am! Something else to add to the list, cheers, Andrew The waterless coolant wont boil but will make it run hotter. The stuff can catch fire too. Looong thread somewhere. IanPatterson
Thanks for the comments. Revotec fan installation next. Main reason is I want to take the beast down to my place in SW France for the whole of summer next year. Can get a bit warm in August Anyone down in SW France next year (Lot, Dordogne etc. let me know. Ian
MilesA
Ian That looks like a cheap and easy way to test temperatures and verify the gauge. How did you attach or insert the two probes to the hoses? Miles
