TR4A1965
I think I may have finally got to the bottom of why my overdrive was taking an age to disengage. The restrictor valve was blocked. To get to it, I had to dismantle the interior of the car to get the gearbox tunnel out. Was there an easier way to get to the pesky thing? Have I just done something the hard way? Pictures attached of the valve (With a pin in it) and the stripped down TR4A interior. Best. Paul.

IMG_8776.jpgIMG_8789.jpg Hi Paul Anything to do with that ares of the car usually requires the interior stripping out unfortunately. I recently worked on the gear selector switches so had to do the same thing. Even the speedo cable is virtually inaccessible from the underside, and unless you've got a ramp or inspection pit, it would be very difficult. Kevin
stillp
It's easier if you take the steering wheel off as well! Pete
Fireman049
Hi Paul ~ This is how I modified my gearbox tunnel on my 3A making access to the various parts very easy. Tom. Edited March 31, 2018 by Fireman049
TR4A1965
I have holes all over mine too Tom but not where the darn valvey-thingy is. My gearbox tunnel is in 2 halves and the valve-thingy is on the join??? I'll sleep on it and maybe make a mod to the tunnel in the morning. Best Paul.
RogerH
Hi Paul, how often are you going to go there again. Do the easy things - oil filler, speedo angle drive, HT starter top bolt access holes. But the valvy thingy is a one off job. Roger

TR4A1965
I would hate a FLOPPY tunnel. :-)))) Roger, You are like the YODA of TR. I so hope your prophecy correct it is. I never want to do the valvey-thingy again:-) I did plan ahead though and bought a magnet that looks like a car aerial. When I pulled out the ball bearing with it the rest of the valve came to - sorted. If anyone else does this job I can recommend a small amount of fun. Fill your mouth with water and blow hard down the tube. I had an intermittent jet of water come out. I pricked it with a pin and it ran clear with a strong jet. It sounds like madness but actually it works well. I'll report in after the test drive. Best Paul,.
TR4A1965
IT'S FIXED! Clearing the hole in the valve did the job. On the very shaky video you can see the RPM drop and it returning as the overdrive kicks in and out. https://youtu.be/hy__qDgSIwM The test drive this morning proved all is well. Just need to rebuild the car now! Thanks for the wise words as always. Best. Paul.
