Can you guess what this tool does?

PDWA shuttle centralising tool ? (Stags and other models with it fitted etc).

Looks a bit like a tool for Triumph 500/650 motorbike engines used to locate piston TDC, locks in to a hole in the crank.

 

But probably not the same for the car. Looks a bit big for a PDWA tool but it could be that of course?

The solution

 

It is the centralising pin for a Triumph steering rack.

 

On most original Triumph inner steering rack bars there is an indent into which this is locked, to position and lock the rack bar central in the rack housing, prior to installing the rack.

It screws into the plug above the pinion where the grease nipple would go.

 

Fit the rack to the car.

Set the wheels parallel and do tracking.

Fit the steering wheel/column shaft in the correct orientation.

Then off you go once the locking pin is removed and the rack assy is lubricated and a greaser or plug is fitted in its place.

Your steering rack is centralised.
