cfgarrod
I fitted a new alternator and fan belt to my 1970 TR6PI, now there's a loud whistling noise from the alternator. The old fan belt was smooth, the new one is toothed. The belt tension is correct and the noise is not coming from the water pump. The alternator cooling impeller looks just like the old one. The whistle is loudest on pick up to about 2000rpm then quietens, it sounds quite cool, people think the engine is supercharged...! Does the panel have any ideas? RogerH
Hi Chris, have you tried spraying the belt with WD40 to see if it quietens it. Halfords do a whole range of none toothed belts. Roger
RobH
Since this is a new alternator there could be a slight misalignment of the pulleys, so that the belt does not run quite true in the groove and rubs on the side during entry and exit. Shimming the alternator mounting points to bring everything in line might cure it if that is the case.
peejay4A
Any chance of posting an audio clip? It might be the belt but could also be a sign of a failed or failing regulator or diode pack.
RogerH
Hi Pete, Chris states it is a new alternator. Could still be something amiss inside tho' as you think. Roger
Steves_TR6
I too have just fitted a new alternator that also whistles! Its charging nicely but at the weekend i'll check alignment. Steve
peejay4A
Some alternators "sing" when they're charging hard.
boxofbits
Hi all A whistling and singing alternator! Well if it sounds like this I can't even see WD40 making any difference! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zQQ5sEOhbjQ Regards Kevin
Guest ntc
The belt don't fit the pulley simples
