stillp
I'm away from my TR for a few days - could anyone tell me the spanner size to fit the crankshaft dog bolt please? Pete

stillp
Thanks Mike. I was looking at ratchet ring spanners on a market stall and wondering if one of them could be used to rotate the crankshaft for setting tappets. (I have an electric fan.) Biggest they had was 27mm though, a little too small. Pete
McMuttley
Having just completed said task several times - I would suggest that the most important thing is a glove with knuckles protectors !
Lebro
Go for a six sided (hex) ring spanner rather than 12 (bi-hex) as the shape of the dog nut has rounded corners. Bob.
stillp
Yes Bob, the ones I was looking at were hex. Shame they didn't have any large enough. Pete

barkerwilliams
What's wrong with plugs out, into gear and pushing / nudging car along? Unless your garage is on a slope! Alan
stillp
The garage floor is level, but too short to move the car more than about a foot, and the drive is on a slope. Also it rains more outside than in the garage! Pete
Alec Pringle
If you can't lay hands on a 1 1/8" AF then 29mm will just do the job, but only if it's hex rather than bi-hex - it is a whisker oversize, whereas 28mm is a whisker too tight unless you have a very well worn nut. peejay4A
Pardon my ignorance but why "dog bolt"?
Lebro
Because part of it is hexagonal to take a spanner or socket, but also it has indentations to take a starting handle - that part is the "dog" Bob.
peejay4A
That makes sense. Mine's a plain bolt.
RogerH
Hi Pete, you will have trouble with the starting handle then. Roger PS - apart from no hole in the radiator
stillp
I remember some criticism of S-T in the motoring press for providing a dog bolt on the crankshaft for a starting handle, a hole in the grille for a starting handle, and then put a radiator between the two. Didn't somebody sue them in the sixties for the cost of a radiator, after he'd tried to insert a starting handle? Pete
