Dave Ashworth
Dear All, Can anyone tell me if the front suspension from a TR4A is the same as that on TR4, as in wishbones, springs, trunnions, etc? Thanks for your help. Dave.
Graze
Dave Trunnions are different so I suspect it is mostly different.. Have a look at the moss pictures from the catalogue http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/shop-by-model/triumph/tr2-4a/steering-suspension/front-suspension/front-suspension-tr2-3a-tr4.html http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/shop-by-model/triumph/tr2-4a/steering-suspension/front-suspension/front-suspension-tr4a.html Graze Edited April 10, 2016 by Graze
Alec Pringle
Hi Dave, 4 and 4A front suspension systems are quite distinct and different . . . . . Cheers Alec
Drewmotty
Trunnions on 4a are threaded left and right hand. Thread is larger diameter. Stub axle is 1" higher on the vertical link. Bottom wishbones are different to allow for wider trunnion. Edited April 11, 2016 by Drewmotty
RogerH
........but apart from all that....... Roger
Lebro
Even two sorts of TR4 suspension: early ones are same a TR2 - 3 0° castor angle Late ones have different trunnions, & upper wishbones to give 3° castor angle. The trunnions are different again for TR4A - TR6, as are the vertical links. The upper wish bones remain the same. Bob. (been researching this lately !)
Dave Ashworth
Right then... Well, thank you for all that wonderful technical input. I have no idea where to start now. Perhaps I'll work on the rear suspension then instead. :) Seriously, thank you all very much for that great information. Dave.
AndyR100
As a follow-on to the question, out of interest, is it possible to do a straight-swap of the later assembly (top & bottom wishbones, vertical link, trunion) from a 4a/5/6 onto a 4? And keep the existing Spring/shock? Thanks.... Andy
Drewmotty
It will fit but lower the front of th car by around a. Inch.
TriumphV8
Its a worthwile swap and the height can be compensated by spring spacers and the shocks can be kept as they are. I make my spacers from POM individually (cheap and quickly done and as both front springs are not fully the same a good idea to make wheel loads on both axles exactely the same)
AndyR100
Thanks for confirming.... I'd been meaning to ask that for a while! ....... Andy
Drewmotty
Its a worthwile swap and the height can be compensated by spring spacers and the shocks can be kept as they are. You can make the car look right by putting spacers under the springs but the camber gain will be all over the place and you will suffer from unacceptable levels of bump steer.
