Clutch slave cylinder seals

Recommended Posts

Greetings, Oh Sage Ones,

Just a quicky - the slave cylinder is leaking, and since I'm a skinflint, I thought I might try changing the seals. Is there a good place to source them, or are they all the same?

Regards,

Austin

Just yesterday we stripped three cylinders that are new and could not be used

because they did not build up pressure.

The culprit was the rubber that got weak and nearly doubled the size.

At the master cylinder the one way valve got deformation in a way

that it became a triangle in its plastic housing and could not seal.

Also in the slave cylinder the rubber had a problem, it blocked the piston.

As this one in operation only has to move a bit to the outside when pressed

it will work but with a bad feeling.

So my recommendation is to rely on original Girling repair sets

but before doing that look at the cylinder for rust dimples and bore wear.

TBH I have found its uneconomic to try re-sealing as they dont tend to last too long before leaking again. Fit new units.

Should I change the master cylinder and hydraulic line as well, Stuart?

I've just got New Unit from TR London,£20 County or £30 TRW,I went TRW so we'll see how that performs.

Hi Niall

At least no-one can accuse you of buying the cheaper option. :P

Let us know how it fairs?

Keep meaning to buy a spare!

Cheers

I picked up a Lockheed nos one a while ago , not used it yet .Should I think about stripping down and checking condition.

Mark.

You may well find it needs a re-seal depending on how its been stored.

If you have a plastic line then that bit should be OK but if its a rubber flexi then that would be worth changing. If the master has been OK then carry on with it.

I recently replaced the clutch master & slave cylinders - I went for complete units rather than re-sealing, they came from Moss and were fine.

Thanks, Stuart, and yes, it's still the plastic line.
