DaveN Posted March 9, 2015 Report Share Posted March 9, 2015 I've decided to pull the steering rack apart and overhaul it, however the rack ends 'pin and ball' are quite heavily corroded. These are £37 each!! And a new pinion is about £57!! So I'm considering replacing the complete assembly. Has anyone any experience of the new racks that are available... Quality? Is it work getting a ' quick rack'? And finally what's the steering like with a 'quick rack' Quote Link to post Share on other sites
harrytr5 Posted March 10, 2015 Report Share Posted March 10, 2015 I found the quick rack to be heaver than the standard.Due to a health issue around six years ago I changed to power steering and have not looked back.Around £1200 to convert but to me, oh so worth it. I have just rebuilt another TR5 to factory standard and the steering when parking is heavy which is how they are.I have a original rack in pieces which I intended to rebuild but improbability will not. lynchpin Posted March 11, 2015 Report Share Posted March 11, 2015 Hi Since Harrytr5 has mentioned it I wondered what make of power steering you used on the 5, my wife was having problems driving our 89 golf mk1 cabriolet because of the heavy steering and we fitted a system from "easy steer" which is an electric system fitted into the column the same as vauxhall corsa etc they advertise it for peugeot 205, escorts and say they can adapt it to classics as well. Not cheap, but well-engineered in my opinion (not that I want power steering!). This company has been at each of our IWEs over the last 5 or 6 years with a rig that shows exactly how the kit fits. I had considered PS but discounted it on the grounds of cost then I looked at a Corsa one at the local scrap yard.... Whilst looking for an electric fan! Thought it was a good idea at the time but then thought about the potential problems of adapting it to fit. Interesting comment there Neil too! So back to my rack, I've pulled it apart and found the rack teeth worn around the centre position. (That explains why one track rod was wound nearly fully home the other was on about 5 turns). The pinion isn't too bad but all the bushes are excessively worn. Decision made I sneaked out of work and popped to Moss .....got a new rack and a revotec fan kit! Tr4Tony Posted March 13, 2015 Report Share Posted March 13, 2015 Hi The best racks are available through TR Enterprises - made to order by Titan Engineering and the rack body is of single billet construction, the moving parts high strength steel. All precision made and a pleasure to use. MOSS racks have in the past been prone to sudden failure, so worth checking that you have one that is of their revised design. I will take it into work tomorrow and dismantle it and take a looksee inside. The only fault, if one could call it that is that it's sealed for life no provision to lube it. harrytr5 Posted March 14, 2015 Report Share Posted March 14, 2015 On the Moss steering rack there is no provision for an earth strap.My Horn would not work till I drilled and tapped a thread to recieve a small bolt and earth tag to chassis. Ian is right on both accounts.Members who have driven my TR5 with power steering are just amazed how good the steering feels. Alistair (www.powersteeringforclassiccars.co.uk) is one of life's inventors and his stuff is well over engineered and safe.I would not hesitate to use any of his products. Regards Harry.
