Richard71
Hello All, I'm sure I've read somewhere here on the forum of components, particularly suspension parts being anodised. What are the benefits if any and the expense involved? Just curious. Richard.
RogerH
Hi Richard, anodising can only be done to aluminium or its alloys. It puts a hard layer on the surface that stops/slows corrosion (although the corrosion is a protective coating in itself). It can also be coloured and bright (similar to chrome). Well worth doing if a paint scheme can't be done. Roger
Richard71
Thanks Roger, I must have been thinking of something completely different. Ta!
RogerH
Hi Richard, many people do powder coating of the steel parts. Roger
Don H.
Roger, although ferrous metals aren't anodised, they can be passivated by various techniques, yes? This is done on some stainless steel grades in particular, ISTR. Maybe passivation is what you're thinking of, Richard?
AlanT
Years back this was done with Cadmuim. Now banned in EU. Stiil used in the Far-East though. I made some stuff that got tested in a salt-spray chamber. The "stainless" fittings corroded but the Far-East Cadmuim passivated were fine. Anodising isn't hard to do. Frost's have a DIY kit. This should work fine for smallish parts. Edited February 10, 2014 by AlanT
stillp
Were you thinking of sheradising Richard?
Richard71
Dunno what I was thinking really, but I've definitely seen pics somewhere of TR suspension parts with a bright bronze type effect coating.

peejay4A
Powder coat is available in metallic, I had my grille powder coated. There's a whole spectrum of colors available so I'd bet that the Racetorations parts are powder coated.
AlanT
Or maybe coloured galvanise. This is hot-dip zinc plate. Don't know how its done but I've seen a "gold" finish like this on brake calipers.
stillp
Looks like gold-passivated bright zinc to me. I think the 'gold' colour was introduced to make it look more like cadmium, which is more corrosion-resistant but poisonous, environmentally harmful, mutagenic, etc., etc. I don't know how it's done either, but when I used to work as a test equipment engineer, we had a plating shop next door. Wish I still worked there when I was restoring the 4A.

RogerH
Hi Richard, Frost's do all manner of spray paint that mimics metal finishes. It could be one of theirs. Roger
