RAK
Hi, Am I correct in thinking that TS8955 is unlikely to have had engine TS11081E originally fitted? Thanks Rob
Don H.
Unlikely, but easily checked. Have you asked for a trace yet?
RAK
Hi Don, I have a document which came with the car, one of Bill's...no engine number though. Rob
billy l
Hi Rob, Usually engine numbers were quite a few numbers ahead of the commission no due to being sold to other manufacturers, Morgan etc, interestingly TS8995E was the highest engine no fitted to a TR2 also some early cars sold as TR3's were originally built as TR2's but then upgraded to TR3 before being sold. But they still had TR2 on their comm plate. Confusing eh? Cheers Bill. Edited February 5, 2014 by billy l
vivdownunder
Engine TS11081E may or may not be original, but it is correct for TS8995 in that it would have originally been fitted with a low port Le Mans head. High port heads weren't introduced until somewhere around engine TS12606E. When the TR3 was released, engine numbers were typically about 300 units higher than the commission number. However, if an engine didn't make spec on test run prior to delivery to the assembly line, it was rectified then fitted to a later car, thus breaking the sequence. TR 2100
There are many reasons why engine numbers (or body/gearbox/axle numbers) can end up out of sequence with the commission number (or other numbers on the car). If BillPs trace doesn't show the engine number, then it's likely not recorded, but you could always try a Heritage trace. Usually, it is BillP's trace that can throw up extra information, but you never know. A difference of 2000 is pushing the limit of what could be an original engine. I don't have build numbers to hand, but I'm sure someone could advise the numbers of cars being built at that time, and what the 2000+ difference represents with regard to time. Must be a few months, which is indeed pushing the limit of what could be original. AlanR Edited February 6, 2014 by TR 2100
vivdownunder
Hi Alan, in round figures TR3 production during 1956 was 462 units per month. So if we take it that TS8955 would be expected to have an engine around TS9255E, then engine TS11081E seems about 4 months out of kilter. BrianC
Maybe the original engine failed in the first few months (or even pre-sales) and the factory supplied a replacement from stock.
Rocky
Does anyone know what my engine with number TS42589E, I took it out of my 1959 TR-3. When I changed my water pump the pully sticks out 1” farther than the crank pully thanks rocky
RobH
Welcome to the forum Rocky. Rather than hijack this thread to a new topic it might be an idea to start a new one. Can you give us more details and perhaps a photograph of your problem? Does the engine still have the original wide-belt pulleys or has it been converted for a narrow belt? Did you compare the new water pump with the old one? Edited June 20, 2020 by RobH
David Owen
I was wondering if there are instructions on how to initiate a trace via Mr. Piggott? Edited June 21, 2020 by David Owen
