Tr3 Starter Motor Spares or rebuild

Recommended Posts

Hi Guy,

Have used these guys, found them friendly, knowledgeable and good pricing. I liked that they would tackle anything.

Bomb Starter rebuilt around £80 about a year ago. Bomb starter is very heavy to ship though and may make it prohibitive cost. Worth a try.

Guy, it might be a simple fix - the rear bush has a habit of dislodging and drops out if the dust cap is missing.

If it won't engage then it might need a new rubber drive coupling, or the bendix gear has gunked up on the shaft and needs a clean up. Sometimes the shaft is incorrectly greased when all it needs is dry lube with a light dust of graphite. On rare occasions the bendix return spring breaks or the brushes need replacing

The earthing path via the body is a weakness. I couldn't believe the improvement in mine when I fitted an earth cable directly from the battery to the starter top mount bolt.

Regards,

Viv.

Thanks Rod Viv and Roger,

Got it off, its a Type A Bomb jobby, and flywheel has bolt on ring gear.

So i can conclude that DPO had fitted the wrong dam starter.

According to Moss blerb... " wrong motor engaging with wrong ring gear, it works for a short period then shreds the teeth on the bendix"

Dpo only drove car for 300 miles in ten years and one before who most likely fitted it had it on for about 9000 miles.

Will consider next move

Thanks for your tips

Cheers

GUY

There's only one true way to repair a starter motor and that's to send it to someone who can do more than you can. In particular he can take out the field coils, cut the linen insulation off them, clean and strip off the old Shellac recoat with new, re wrap with new linen and screw them back in again. He must also overhaul the armature and possibly even replace the commutator. It costs about 50% at least more than the vastly superior Japanese replacements most use for their superior reliability and longevity.

There are few companies that can do a proper job, we use Trevor on 0121 744 4348 for the Rolls-Royce ones and they cost about £550 for the starter motor and gearbox and £600 for the clutch assembly. Sadly there's no alternative, but at least it's as good as new, which is more than can be said for the sort of repair most starter motors receive.

There is only one cost effective answer chap

Ok so we are talking Hi Torque then.

Well i have a Tr shop Wosp one on my Tr6, and find it screachy, so am looking for something that sounds better.

Am sure there was a thread recently where a comment was made on a HTS that sounded ok?

Heres some options then

Trshop...Wosp

I have a wosp on my Tr6, dont particulary like the noise over a standard unit, but it serves its purpose well.

Cnt a recall where i read that one HTS make sound better than others, maybe wishful thinking

Its the flywheel the engineering shop balanced Neil

And i should have noticed the incompatability of the two :( Prior to fitting it all back

Guy, I don't know what private advice you have, but there's a one tooth difference between the early and late starter/ring gear sets. You can't just fit a later starter to match your bolt on ring gear as the gearbox bellhousings are different. Post TS50000 gearbox housings were changed to provide clearance for the later starter which engages from the back of the ring gear.

Not only is the tooth count different, but your starter has been trying to engage into the plain side of the ring gear - bolt ons have the chamfered entry to the back.

As suggested above, easiest solution to save a strip down is a hi-torque starter. There are two versions - (1) with pinion to suit the earlier shrink on ring gear and (2) with pinion to suit the later bolt on ring gear. You need the later version. It doesn't matter that the ring gear chamfers are to the rear with a Hi torque.

Most hi-torque starters are Nissan based so the car fires up like a ricer, but fitting one will save a lot of work correcting the PO's mismatch.

Viv.

Hi Viv,

My e mails have been busy over this.

You sum it up nicely. Didnt realise starters were so interesting.

I have a tr4 box on my motor, so have the fatter bellhousing.

I have been offered a good long type starter which will engage the flywheel from the rear.

Going to crawl under the car and rotate engine just to check the ring gear for ware or damage, but think

all is well.

Thanks

Guy

Heres another query, but to do with wiring up a Hi Torque starter to Tr3

As you have a solenoid up next to the battery, and as a HTS come with one fitted,

hows it wired.?

With reference to this link

Is it just a case of fitting" a small wire to bridge the small solenoid terminal to the large terminal on the side of the starter and connect your existing large starter cable to the same large terminal on the side of the starter." ?
