Rear Springs won't fit!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi

I have just bought a set of suspension coil springs from a reputable TR dealer and the rear spring diameter of the new springs are 105 mm and will not fit in my trailing arms correctly. The old rear springs are 95 mm. The TR dealer is telling me, that this is the diameter of springs that all the usual suspects are selling and I should grind my T/A to suit. The TR dealer will get me new springs made to 95/100 mm specially at no further cost (which is great on their part) but may take a month or so to do.

So really my question is what should I do as I am a bit scared of adjusting the T/As to fit and I am sure I can't be the 1st person to have this problem and does anyone have a record of the size of springs originally fitted for the front & rear.

I appreciate your HELP, advice and comments in advance.

I would urge you in the strongest terms not to grind out theTAs. They are 40 years old and unlikely to wthstand that and they are not easy to replace either.

 

I am mystified by this as i replaced all springs on my 5 three years ago and they were a straight swap.

My thoughts as well re grinding the T/A, its only just nipping the T/A just before it touches the rubber insulators. What about grinding a small chamfer on the spring edge.

Grinding a chamfer on the spring would not worry me. Try to do it so the grind marks follow the thread rather than crossing it so that you give less chance for a bit to break off.

 

Otherwise whats to loose?

 

A broken spring maybe, but thats about all. Nothing irreplaceable. You can always find someone to make a spring.

Your post made me a bit anxious as I'm doing the same job at the moment.

I checked the new rear springs (standard) bought from Moss earlier this year.

The diameter is ca 98mm and they seem to fit fine in the trailing arm.

Looks like the Moss standard springs are a close match to the originals, mine are from TRGB slightly uprated/lowered and they have said they have had no probs fitting them in their workshop cars but agree that they can be a bit tight on occasions and just need turning to find a good fit.

The suggestion of grinding out the trailing arms takes some beating . . . . the bloke responsible for that suggestion is in my book the undisputed leader of this year's TR Register Prat of The Year award.

 

Can't say I'm too impressed with the idea of grinding chamfers off the spring either, sounds to me like a swift route to a broken spring.

 

Sorry Kevo, but either a spring fits the OE housing or it's not fit for purpose, simple as that.

Why are replacement springs being manufactured oversize anyway? You can't go grinding away at suspension parts, even moreso springs which have been tempered.

 

Haven't been given front springs by mistake? I think they're slightly larger in diameter.

Hi Kevo,

 

Front springs are 95mm outside Diameter and rear springs are 100mm Dia. Rear springs are also longer than the fronts. Check the length as you may have been sent front springs by mistake.

 

As others have said, If they aren't correct send them back but DON'T start grinding your trailing arms mate.

Thanks for the advice guys, I would not touch the T/As, mentioned this to TRGB at the time I also got them to check my sizes against their stock and they say I have the correct springs.

The spring sizes are Rear = 105 x 2300 x 14 Front = 105 x 2600 x 12 labeled F39

 

Tony thanks for the reply but I thought small dia for rear and longer at the back as you say.

 

Think I will send them back, bl**dy waste of time.

They have to be the wrong ones to be so oversized. Someone at the warehouse has dropped a pallet load and these have been put in the wrong box of similar looking TR6 rear springs.

If the trailing arms are 'undersized', then it's the first time I've ever heard of such a thing . . . . . .

 

It's not as though any other Triumph trailing arm will substitute for a TR IRS unit and confuse matters.

 

This afternoon I checked my spare units, 4A, 5, early CP6, late CR6 - using an original nos spring. Fits all of them like a hand in glove, there can't be more than a millimetre or two in diameter between the 4 arms.

PS. If the supplier is sure these are right you may be doing something wrong. Or they may be staffed by non specialists. Get Gary Bates involved .
