Hi Jim,

 

Yep, that's what I did when I fitted the bumpers after the restoration of the body. I cut out various bits of rubber from the inner tube of a bicycle tire just to protect the fresh paint on the body. And I had no problems fitting the bumpers this way.

Yeah, I used small rubber washers...it just didn't feel right to bolt hard chrome up against soft paintwork!

I use the thin versions of the circular rubber chassis to body pads, I always have them in stock as you always have more than you need in the mounting kits. Available from all the "Usual suspects" ;)

I cut out some 'u' shaped sections from closed-cell foam to match the bumper bracket profiles, bolted on the bumpers and just slid the packing pieces in place before tightening up.
