Rear brake shoes, quality

Hello all

I am doing a backend rebuild of my TR and driving from Denmark - presently visiting my son in the town of Mechelen where there is a large parts supplier called Anglo Parts. I was thinking about popping into Anglo parts and buying some new brake shoes, but I can see they are €51 compared to £21 from Moss.

I’m travelling to the UK for Christmas so can get the Moss ones back in my hand luggage but I’m just wondering if there is any quality difference and why such big difference in price?

There's 'quality', on which I agree with Roger, some brake material might as well be cardboard and there's 'grade'.   (Whole books have been written on 'quality', notably Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, but we'll ignore that Chautauqua !)

The grade of brake material depends on the temperature at which it is designed to operate.   Ordinary, road brakes will grip from cold, but if used until they heat up beyond their designed range, will 'fade'.      Race brakes may not work very well from cold, which can be a bit embarrassing as you back out of the garage - and can't stop at the wall outside! -  but will go on working when the brakes are nearly red hot.    Reputable manufacturers all produce brake materials in those grades, and also in what may be called "fast road" materials that work in a middle range.   Typical is Mintex's range of 1144 (road), 1155(fast road) and 1166 (full race) materials.    Possibly because they cost more to make, or because the market is much less, the higher temperature brakes cost more.    Ask your suppliers what they are selling.

I use a competition material on the brake shoes of my TR6.  It is a fast road/track car.  There is certainly a difference in efficiency between these & standard, in particular, hand brake performance.

Historically C&B then latterly Moss used Canons of Clapham for their shoe re lining.    That was when the big Girling 10”x2.25” shoes were unobtainable    We also had an option of VG 95 friction material for the racers.    The shoes were strictly exchange and cost about £70 for an axle.
