Hi-Torque starter motor

Recommended Posts

Isn't the forum wonderful? After years of fairly fault free TR use I seem to be asking questions all the time!

My current TR's were fitted with hi torque starter motors when I aquired them and what a vast improvement on the old ones withBendix gears. However the TR3a starter motor is now playing up and infrequently turns over the engine whilst whirring away and when the engine does turn over it is only for about 1 revolution. On the older motors I would nhave taken them off, washed the bendix in petrol and all would be fine.

The hi torque units do not have a bendix and so must be engaged with the flywheel ring ring permanently.  So is a repair possible? Is there a specialist who can carry out a repair, or is it a case of a new unit?

No they aren't Dave. The pinion is thrown outwards by a solenoid, which is the smaller cylinder on top of the motor. That draws about 30 Amps so the first thing to ask is how yours is connected and whether there is some bad connection.   It is possible that water ingress has damaged the innards - bad corrosion can result.

Repairs are possible and others on here have done it.  What make is yours?

Been there, done that on my Powerlite. Entirely my fault, there was a minor but long term drip from the notorious engine block drain tap.

Both now replaced, Powerlite were good enough to give me a break on the price. The tap is now replaced with a bolt and locking nut

You could check the retaining cog rings as mine broke up.

If you fit one of these hi torque starter motors and use the new starter motor’s own solenoid instead of the factory fitted starter solenoid just think about the potential fire hazard if you use the existing solenoid as a cable junction box.

Fit some insulation to that braided fuel hose and control cable.

Hi Dave,

this is quite an old post now and you haven't replied.

As RobH pointed out, the solenoid of these motors draw quite a current that may cause your starter btton/switch issues.   It is best to run it through the original solenoid.

As for repairs most if not all Auto electricians can repair these motors.  I've had two fair new motors repaired to a better standard than original for £100 a go,

Roger
