We have a couple of old style seat belt eye bolts at the back corners of the shelf. Climbing tape loops are secured to the eyes and dog harnesses carabinered to the tapes. We stuff pillows between the seat backs and shelf to fill the gap and give the dogs a bit more space.

Hi Mike - we have a 25 kg standard poodle who goes everywhere with us in our TR5 Surrey top.  We also wondered whether this would be possible or sensible.  We securely fitted a D bolt into the floor of the rear seat area and use carabiners and a short strap to connect to a proper dog harness for her size and weight.  We stuff two small pillows behind the seats, and use a sheep skin rug to create a comfy, flat platform for her.  Works a treat, top off or on.  Cheers, Robert
