Chris Hubball
I am renewing the outlet pipe from the mechanical pump to the carbs how far from the end of the pipe do I position the olive before I connect into the pump outlet. Cheers Chris
Lebro
Push it right onto the pipe, and then some, push the pipe into the pump, then follow up with the nut, the nut will push the olive back till it touches the seat. Bob
Chris Hubball
Thanks Bob when you say right onto the end of the pipe should it be flush with the end or on a bit further Cheers Chris
RobH
A lot further. Start with around 10mm of pipe sticking out beyond the olive.
Grahamgl
Make sure that you push the pipe in as far as it will go and keep pressing it in whilst you tighten the nut. Graham

adriantr4
Hello The olive is loose on the pipe. A rather stupid question: This is a Compression Fitting I presume - doing the union up as mentioned by previous posters will squash everything together? Any advantage to (say) brazing the olive on? I have said new olive & new shiny pipe that awaits fixing to car (item 52 in diagram) - after a pause of several years. Thanks, Adrian

Push the pipe as far in as you can then do the nut up thus squashing the olive in the correct place on the pipe to make a good seal. Do not braze it. Stuart.
james christie
An awful lot of 5/16” olives get sold as 1/4” and vice versa and a few more 6mm are sold as 1/4” Make sure you have the right one!! Don’t ask me how I know….. james
