there is also 26tpi in ME (like the 20tpi) but is not standard.

Roger

I thought 26TPI was more for Cycle thread.

There are only two standard ME thread  TPI - 32 & 40 and have the Whitworth thread angle of 55'

Cycle threads are set at 26tpi and have an angle of 60'

So if you have the odd situation where you need 26tpi but with 55' angle then up pops a 'special'

Why didn't they just stick to BA

Or BSB?  All 26tpi and 55 degrees

...and that is what the die I have marked ME is.  I have re measured the pitch with a bright light and magnifier.   My die is 7/16 x 26 ME so we deduce it to be Whitworth form 55 degree, rather than cycle which is 60 degree.

The one with the brass scarf is the 26tpi. T’other is 32 tip. Both marked ME

Many thanks definitely not now needed.

Smeared the inside of the new knob insert thread with JB Weld. Twenty four hours later, tapped it with my just-delivered 7/16 x 20tpi BSC tap. Walked the mile to the lock up in sunshine this morning. New knob threaded on like a dream. The end of a quite a few weeks head scratching this problem.
