ChrisD197
I am looking to replace the wheels on my TR4A. I see that the TR Shop is offering 5.5 x 15 either in 72 spoke or in 70 spoke centre laced. The centre laced are more expensive, so I assume that they are 'better' in some way. Can anyone explain the difference (apart from the £30 a wheel!) please? Chris
RogerH
Hi Chris, Haven't a clue why they are more expensive but they are easier to clean as the spoke/hub area is accessible all around the spoke. Roger
stuart
Be aware the centre laced push the wheels out further and may be outside the bodywork. Stuart.
Drewmotty
Not sure about the actual strength but 72 spokes look like they may be stronger as the spokes are spread across the width of the rim. Any comments from any one armed with facts?

deryckp
Hi Guys, I have had my 6 for ten years and it was fitted with these wheels when I bought it. 6j x 15. They are still in good condition with good chrome, the spokes are stainless. It is marginal whether or not they project from the bodywork, I have never had any comments at MOT time, but they do splatter the lower part of the bodywork with road dirt when its raining. As Roger stated they are much easier to clean than conventional wires. To me the big advantage is that they run tubeless. I run 195/65 x 15 Uniroyal Rain Experts, and I'm suited with them. ChrisR-4A
The centre laced wheel, image 1, has a flat flange area free of spokes near the outer edge, looks like the Boranni wires fitted to Ferarris. The wider the wheel the wider the flat flange. The standard cross laced wheel image 2 has spokes near to the edge. Both current types are tubeless ready. Chris

Stuart. Chris, Stuart is right - here's a photo of VUX when I bought it back in June 18, the PO had fitted 5.5J centre laced with 195s and they did stick out and I don't think 185s would have made much difference. They've now gone along with the 'wheelbarrow' exhaust. Cheers, Andrew Edited February 25, 2020 by Andrew Smith
Peter V W
I do like the look of wider wire wheels, but wider wheels and therefore wider tyres must add extra load to the suspension and brackets, more grip, more load. Steering at slow speed will Also be heavier.
