Can anyone tell me is the taper on the TR4a outer ball joints on the steering different to the ones on the TR2/3a?

If so then the steering arms are obviously not interchangeable

.

The Moss parts catalogue shows different part numbers for steering levers and outer ball joints vis a vis TR2/3's and TR4's. So there would be a question mark on their interchangeability anyway. I have no idea about the different ball joint tapers if there is any difference, but I don't think that's the real issue.

Hi Rob,

I was aware of the different part numbers and the TR4a outer ball joints are very different to the TR2 because the TR4a has rack and pinion.

I was thinking that if the actual taper was the same then with my particular set-up the TR4a steering arms could be an improvement.

Hello Colin

Have you considered the Revington modified steering arms and longer Tie Rods? You can then use the same ball joints. I have this set-up on my TR3 and it does improve the steering by eliminating bump steer and improving turn in.

Thanks for the information. I think my question has been answered.

Rob, I think that's the direction I will go eventually.

As an aside somebody told me recently that imperial and metric tapers are different.

The imperial taper is 1:48

The metric taper is 1:50 (just to be bloody different)

So do modern TBJ and TRE with the metric nut have the metric taper !!!!

It may be worth bluing a joint to see.

And on the subject of track for ends, what do you do it you have the nyloc nut half way to being tight when the taper starts to slip and turn rather than being pulled together?

I try and get a lever of some sort over the ball jont to keep the pressure on and do up the nut until it pulls together on its own.

Try using a plain nut first until the taper is tight, then change for a nyloc

Cheers,

Mike

Doh !!

That would save the knuckles ??
