Saving a little money

The twin cable choke unit on my car had cables frayed from years of use.

A new one from Mr Moss is £75.

I renewed the cables by removing the knob

slowly easing back the spring retainer which holds the half moon detent unit (Don't lose it), have the cable in a position that the detent is as low as possible.

withdraw the pull unit from its holder and cut off the 2 cables. NOTE the position that it was in before removal.

Drill them out using a 1.5 then 2 mm drill.

Insert the new cables though the outer ones and Push them into the holes you have drilled.

Then solder them in place, then carefully reassemble.

I used a rear brake bicycle cable which I soldered the ends before cutting so as to stop the wires spreading, then trim the solder.

The rear cable is 2 metres long so, easily long enough for both carbs.

Cable cost was £1.99. I do need a new knob though

Hi Pete,

well done. I knew you would catch me up.

I did virtually the same as you on the TR4.

Bike brake cable did the TRick.

I also had to make a new ratchet as the old one had rounded off.

Me Scott, you Amundsen.

Do you have a lathe Roger? I would love to know how to use one correctly.

I also did this on my choke cable, so much better than using a modern replacement.

My ratchet was recoverable using a small file. The trick in fitting is to put a twist in the cable (inner) befor you clamp the end, thus encouraging the ratchet to align correctly.

Bob.

Bob, my choke unit doesn't rotate and kept in place by a groove running along the length of the rod.

I think you have another type.

News , I can get a set of Knobs for about £20!

Insert the inner cable to the carburettor trunnion and fit to the choke operating lever. Secure the cable by the pinch nut.

Remove the cable and trunnion an twist the cable/trunnion in a clockwise direction at least two turns and then refit the

cable to the carburettor. This will now cause the choke operating knob to spring into the locked position.

Last year, a chum of mine needed a new knob for the gearstick of his Morris 8.

We had days of good cheap schoolboy fun, and then a day out at the Beaulieu autojumble wandering round "looking for a knob"!!

It's the little things.....!
