astontr6
What are the symptoms for this? I have a 'Werring Noise' from the gearbox area when the car is idling and if I push the clutch pedal to the floor the noise goes? Lastly does anyone have experience of using Uprated Laygears and if so who from? Thanks, Bruce.
marki
Hi Bruce. Sound more like release bearing to me, is the box quiet when you give it some in first second or third ? As this is when the lay shaft would be heard. Cheers Mark.
astontr6
Hi Mark! I can hear no noise when in first or second! Bruce.
GT6M
wot about 3 rd on light throttle at speed, say 50-60 ish a grumble rumble is a rear bearing, esp if it goes quiet in 4th. M
marki
Thrust bearing it is then, you'll be glad to know it much cheaper and easier. Might as well replace the whole clutch while you're there. Mark.
matttnz
Before mine went it was a noisy, chattery mess... but so was every English car I'd ever owned. I figured it was a design feature to reassure you that things were still in fact turning inside there and got quite a surprise at how quiet a rebuilt 'box is. Pre-collapse symptoms were a reluctant 2nd gear up and especially downchanging w questionable synchro (good double declutching practice), v noisy in neutral that quietened somewhat with the clutch in. Would never have described it as a "whirr" though. Local TR specialist recommended RHP bearings (Rimmers: 58391RHP) as being a significant improvement over the standard sourced items. So far, so good...
astontr6
Hi all! Thanks for your responses. It has been diagnosed by a TR/Stag Specialist as the lay shaft bearings. He was surprised that my gear box has never been stripped down in 43 years!, that I change the oil about every 4 years! Quote ; People don't seem to change the oil in gearboxes! So I have booked it in for the gearbox rebuild and they will check out the O/D Unit as the 'O' Rings often go hard with age and clear the metal swarf from the filters etc. and replace the clutch unit. Lastly, Has anyone used the Moss Uprated Lay Gear? Bruce.
jerrytr5
Don't forget that the laygear is always turning even in neutral, so if the noise stops when the clutch is depressed it doesn't automatically mean that it is the release bearing. My gearbox made a regular dull clunking at idle in neutral when the layshaft bearings cried 'enough'. Don't know about the Moss upgrade. I fitted Revingtons version which doubles up the needle roller bearing on the layshaft, and very good it is too. Jerry.

heckler
Bruce. I fitted moss uprated lay gear , it's done 24,000 miles no problems . Make sure you get a lay shaft with hardening up to standard though . Chris
