Cylinder head bolts

Recommended Posts

Hi again!

I'm about to start an engine rebuild and would like to know if I can re use the head bolts or do I need a set of new standard bolts or the special stretch type?

Going to replace the liners,so can I bolt the head down in one go or do you bolt down, remove the head and check the liner/block face for level.

Any experience great fully received.

Thanks again

Tony

Hi Tony,

the head bolts are re-usable.

from what I have gathered many of the builders get the liners sitting correctly and then fit the head and torque it down. to take up any slack and then re-measure.

I'm sure others will be along with chapter and verse.

Tony,

Refer to the workshop manual for the correct way to seat liners and reuse the original studs and nuts unless damaged for some reason.

Personally I would not re-use these. But then I did have to drill out two sheared-off ones.

If you knew for sure that these had never been over-torqued and they wern't 50 years old they would be re-usable.

But it's my belief that in many cases they will have been over-torqued. This arises when blokes fit them with lubricated threads.

This increases the tensile load they have to support before the turning torque rises to the specified value.

If you do break off one of the long ones they are very tedious to get out because they normally break just at the end of the UNC thread.

No doubt many times you can re-use them and every thing will be fine.

If you do get new ones you have to ensure they are the right quality. Not so easy these days.

For what it is worth, I always use new studs when the old studs look like the originals. I use the ARP kit. Not much dearer than the aftermarket ones you get. After all they will most likely be there for some years if you get the job right the first time.

Also pulling down to 100ft/lbs still makes me a little nervous.

I just clamp my liners down to check the protrusion. Never had an issue with it. Lucky maybe.
