Don H.
From p 659 of The Autocar from 22 October 1954, the "London Show Report" issue. A transparent (acrylic, presumably) distributor cap sounds like a neat idea. I'd love to play with one even today. Anyone ever see one, or use one, or best of all, have one? stuart
I have seen one before used as a demo for a Sparkrite electronic ignition set-up but that was years ago. Martin might have one http://www.distributordoctor.com/ Stuart. Edited February 12, 2014 by stuart
RogerH
I'm sure Pyrex could do a glass cylinder head Roger

RAHTR4
Errors - Thus Removed. RAH Edited February 12, 2014 by RAHTR4
RAHTR4
Hi Don, Originals do still exist : The first photo is a Remax cap, a fitment for late 40's and 50's Fords, MG TC's, TD, etc. All very colourful. The second is a Lucas test cap as fitted to various Daimler, Humber, Jaguars and Rovers, through the 50's and 60's. I have yet to find one that fits a four cylinder TR engine. Don H.
Those are neat, Richard! Have you run one? is it as interesting to watch the rotor spin as I'd guess it to be?
RAHTR4
Hi Don, No suitable car, so I have never run one. Never found an owner of a car that has been willing to try either. I am sure that they would work exactly the same as a standard cap, but guess they could probably mist up / get dirty inside fairly quickly? Regards, Richard
Geko
Getting closer...with a meaningful purpose: engine timing with a stopwatch ! http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-Clear-Plastic-Lucas-Distributor-Cap-/331126112659
Icarus60
Hi Is this the four pot part? I have had this in my "It will come in handy one day" cupboard for a fair few years. Regards Rog
RAHTR4
Hi Rog, None of my Lucas catalogues list that particular ref / part number. Looking at the shape of the base, it does not exactly match that of a standard TR cap. Does it have a pronounce dome, if so, it may possibly the same as the one selling on USA eBay in Stef's link above. Regards, Richard
Ragtag
Back in the mid 60's, my dad's mate had a big American V8 estate car that he had bought from a US Serviceman and that had a clear distributor cap. I remember seeing it running with the bonnet up, after dark and it was like a mini firework display. So I deduce that the main purose of these caps is to provide entertainment
Don H.
Entertainment is good! That's exactly why I'd play with one.
setron
I have one for my early Morris, but it has a crack in it. This reminds me of seeing a photo of a tr3 at earls court motor show the body was made out of Perspex, I guess that is what they used.
