Lee Dutton
Just tried to grease the UJ's on my 4a cannot get the grease gun on the nipple not enough clearance, thought of replacing the small nipple with a longer one, will this cause any problems when the UJ flexes when driven? regards Lee
RogerH
Hi Lee, fit a long one where necessary, grease the UJ then remove and refit a small one to keep grot out. Having said that most UJ's don't flex that much and a long GN should be OK. Roger
Lee Dutton
Thanks Roger, I will fit the long one and leave it in and see what happens best regards Lee
bob-menhennett
I'd swop the grease nipples back after greasing. If the long grease nipple doesn't "clear " with flexing , I guess you will end up with a bent grease nipple and a damaged thread on the propshaft. A no brainer in my books but maybe someone on the Forum knows for sure. Bob
ianc
I have been running an uprated prop shaft with long-stem nipples (which were fitted by the supplier, Revington) for several years, and no problems. Ian Cornish
Lee Dutton
I have just removed the small nipple, fitted a long one and greased the unit and then refitted the short one, however I would like to keep the long one in for future greasing but it does look a bit strange but if Ian says it should be ok then thats good enough for me. Does anyone know what thread the nipples should be or are they a tapered thread as the new long one seemed a bit tight so I only put it in a few turns. regards Lee
TrRob
Gents, what are UJ's? Rob
RogerH
Hi Rob, Universal Joints or Hardy Spicer Joints. On the end of the prop/drive shafts. Roger
Graham Harris
I think the originals were gas threads and most modern one's are metric and they don't like each other.
stuart
There are several different threads for grease nipples. Some are tapered and some are parallel. Stuart.
ChrisR-4A
If you jack the car up on the chassis or diff and then put the jack under the swinging arm and lift that a small amount you should be able to rotate the shaft to a position where the gun will go on.It won't go on if the shaft is hanging down
Dennis Devon Group
After 50 years in the motor trade, the best way is to bye the grease gun that has the pointed end that fits in the nipple hole just pushing the ball back in then pump in the grease. You don't need to use the end that goes over the nipple as that one is restrictive in tight areas.
carld
Dennis Can you suggest where you can get pointed end grease gun from, as I dont believe I have seen one before. Cheers Carl
Dennis Devon Group
Hi Carl Go to this web site all you need is the bit that screws on the end of your gun if you have the one with a solid tube. It's a SCC1 £1.40 http://www.stephenslube.co.uk/grease_guns.asp
stuart
Just dont slip and stab yourself with it Stuart.
carld
Thanks Dennis, Stuart I promise to only use when I haven't had a Guinness, vino or scotch! That doesn't leave much time to use it!
