Gents,

can anyone confirm if original TR4a gauges had flat or convex glass? Also, does anyone know the Jaeger part numbers for the fuel, oil, temp and ammeter gauges?

thanks,

Steve Hall

Original 4a gauges had flat glasses. The gauges arent always all Jaeger. My 4a has a Smiths ammeter.

Hi,

'61 and maybe '62 TR4 had domed glass. Flat glass came in '63. At least that's what I've always been told.

As such, Lady Ann is flat in the glass department.

Hi Steve,

ALL TR4As had flat glass gauges with the shroud at the top. That's

for sure.

TR4s up to about CT 18,000 (that equates to approx. November 1962)

had the 3A style gauges, i.e convex glass and full face. I think the 3A

and early 4 oil pressure gauge wouild be the same but suspect the other

gauges, though identical visually 3A to 4, would be different for the 4

due to the 4 having a voltage stabiliser fitted.

Maybe not so the ammeter, and note - this was ALWAYS Lucas,

even though all other gauges, large and small, 3A, 4 and 4A, were

always Jaeger.

Approx. CT 18,000 was also the change point for the Mk 2 style TR4

seats, for a short while only until the Mk 3 style were introduced.

It fits, Lady Ann number is CT 20649L.

I have a complete set of early TR4 domed gauges with the fascia. They are all Jaeger, except Ampmeter which is Lucas and they all have long pointers with an upper axis.

I bought it for the Ulster as it has no instruments save the oil pressure.

Hi Rod,

I did say "about" - but I should have said "approx. CT 17,000.

I've had a couple of TR4s, CT 15,9xxLO and (still have) CT 16,9xxLO,

that both had early seats and gauges.

Some time in the TR4/ 4a crossover, the temp gauge changed from numbered type to a rather vague white curve.

I have a theory about the scales on temp gauges for TR4s, but won't bore you with it here.

Flat glass is correct for 4As

For those interested in Jaeger/Smiths/Lucas there is an interesting website that explains the history and connection of these companies.

This explains why the Jaeger instruments in our cars have Smiths written on the rear outer case and why the Ampmeter was Lucas.

Website: http://www.smiths-clocks.co.uk/sm-orign.htm

I'll get my anorak now.................................... :P

Cheers

Hi Steve,

Others have answered your questions, but if you are looking for replacement gauges, then speedy cables manufacture these gauges from the original specs. They also repair them. I am not affiliated, but I am a satisfied customer.
