Smelly TR6 with a bad cough

Recommended Posts

Hi All

Had the TR for a couple of weeks now.

When first driven the car was coughing and spluttering under acceleration, not bad at higher revs but not good at the 2k to 3 k mark

Cleaned the plugs and ran much better. Now done a copule of hundred miles and is runnig very unevenly again. Checked the plugs today expecting them to be all sooty again. Only one plug was in this state the rest were not bad. Not what i was expecting to see, the car has not been driven much for a few years prior to my purchase.

Thre is generally a strong smell of fuel around the car. The fuel consumption is poor ( I only expect 20 ish ). There is an intermitent leak from the lucas pump ( from the tell tale pipe ).

I fear a trip to the TR specialist, but all comments much appreciated. On my test drive today after plug clean there was a rather large back fire incident in town and still coughing and unwilling to accelerate, a sure sigh that all is not well in the TR dept.

I live in Leics and would really appreicate any advice as to the best people to take the car to. The nearest appears to TR Enterprises in Blidworth Mansfield.

Thanks as always for any help.

Hoping to take the TR to the NAC at Stoneleigh next weekend but does not look very likely at present.

Cheers.

Nick.

Hi Nick,

TR Enterprises have a pretty solid reputation, and have had for many years. They're best known perhaps for competition preparation, but they look after plenty of perfectly ordinary TRs as well. If you consider the amount of experience and expertise, good value in my book - and they don't take advantage of TR novices !

In fairness, I should point out that Steve Hall, the owner, has been a friend of mine for 30 years. That does not however influence my opinion of TRE. There are other classic specialists who've been friends for just as long, but that doesn't mean I'd recommend them !

Cheers,

Alec

Hi Nick.

IMHO!!! ;)

THE!!! best thing you can do is try your best to get it to Stoneleigh!

There will be plenty of experts there!!!

ALL probably only too willing to help a sick TR,especially if you put the word out that you only just made it as its coughing and spluttering ;) and you dont know if you will make it home :(:(;)

Am sure it will be a case of all willing to lend a hand in a crisis!!

Somewone will get you sorted out I am sure of it!!!

See you there!!

Cheers will try to take the TR to the show ( may need a fuel tanker to follow ). Failing the TR making it we shall come in a boring modern car, no where near the pleasure involved even if the petrol fumes are not so over powering and the car does not cough.

Look forward to show whatever.

Cheers

Nick,

This is a long shot, but I suggest you check the excess fuel cable is not sticking, and when it is off, there is clearance at the cam on the metering unit. Many years ago I became resigned to the fact that, after a long run in the TR6 I would need a shower and a change of clothes to get rid of the petrol smell. To me it's part of the experience. To avoid the fumes some of my mates have rerouted the exhausts to exit in front of the rear wheels.

Nick - as per PM.....

Pop the car back to us and we can give it the once over - it is probably overfuelling and could be the metering unit choke sticking......

Give me a call to arrange next week - I know it was an Ebay Trade purchase but we'll do our best to help you sort it out.....

Regards

Mark

Will keep you informed.

I know when buying these cars one has to expect teething problems. i feel confident the Classic Marques will do their best, i would not have purchased the car if i did not trust them and appreciate Marks interest in sorting the job out.

Hi Mark,

I have no reason for asking this question other than my own education............it is certainly not 'dig'

Is there a difference between a Trader selling a car on ebay and a Trader selling a car in any other open market?

Hi Chris,

there's traditionally been a clear differentiation between a motor trader selling a 'retail' car and a 'trade sale'.

The former generally implies a forecourt or showroom car, properly prepared and warrantied, and priced accordingly.

The latter implies, for example, a car which the trader has taken in chop (part exchange) and which he is selling on 'as is' - at a commensurately lower price, and without the preparation, warranty and profit margin appropriate to a retail sale.

You pays your money and you takes your choice - along with the attendant risk factor. It's nothing new - and Trading Standards, for example, have a clear understanding of the difference between the two concepts. As with most things, you get what you pay for.

Personally I'd much prefer to purchase on a 'trade' basis, and take personal responsibility for my own judgement - and mistakes, on occasion.

If a trader offers any form of after-sales service on a 'trade sale', then that's one heck of a bonus to the purchaser - and it most certainly isn't the norm.

Cheers,

Alec

Alec is right and here is my take......

The car Nick bought was advertised at a price of £8995 on my website and then reduced to £7995 to sell earlier in the year.

He paid significantly less than the advertised price on Ebay (I won't tell you how much) and as such it was a "trade" sale (sold as seen with no warranty implied or given)

It wasn't cheap specifically because there was anything wrong with it, we just wanted to concentrate on our "top end" cars and hence get the money back into our business so we could buy more TR5's and Mint TR6's!!

Nick is a decent bloke and I could see he was having a few "teething" problems so I offered to help if he could get the car back to us......it should come back this morning and we'll give it the once over.....I suspect the leaky fuel pump is causing a drop in pressure and hence the poor running, I also suspect he has a dodgy injector as one of the metering unit to injector pipes is not pulsing properly......

Hey ho, I'll keep you posted..... :P

Evening all

I agree 100% with Marks comments ( especially the bit about me being a decent bloke ).

When i purchased the car i fully understood the terms under which the deal was done.

I have taken the yellow Peril over to Mark today.

Interesting trip, great once cruising, but not much fun using the slip roads on the A1, which are fairly short in places in a car with a bad cough. Even in a poorley TR6 i enjoyed the run, better with roof down as this allowed the fumes to escape.

Having deposited the car had a couple of hours to kill, and as luck would have it excellent pub 200 yds up the road. Good food and Beer passed the two hours in no time. Then the wife appeared, noticed i had been dining and insisted on being fed too. Given she had taken half a day off work to fetch me and driven 100 miles I gave in ( all heart me ).

On a serious point I appreciate the effort Mark is going to to resolve my teething problems, he was under no obligation to do so and I feel sure all will be well in my TR dept soon.

The morning may bring more news.

Time for Tea

Cheers.

Nick.

Good old Lucas pump leaking!! Swapped for good second hand one (if there is such a thing)

Injector number 3 not spraying at all - looked like an airlock!

Fitted the new sunvisor clips - which we promised Nick anyway....(we're all heart)

Oil and filter changed - supplied by the customer....

We may need to change the metering unit as one of the valves may be faulty - we'll see in the morning....

And a good throttle cable ready to fit.......

Keep you posted!

I believe that your engine may not be covered under warranty as it wasn't rebuilt by our own very competant rebuilder (he also does fast road engines and gearbox and diff rebuilds in-house by the way - plug, plug)

In fact I'm surprised you haven't blown the bottom end of that little power house - oh dear I've just put a fag burn in your nice TR5 hood cover that I might bring to Stonleigh if you're lucky!!!!!

Thanks for the reply Alec.

It seems that the operative word in Mark's statement was 'Trade', rather than 'ebay'! I thought that Mark was making a distinction between ebay and a 'face to face sale' and I was interested to know if there was a difference, as I have always assumed that there isn't one.

However, I wasn't aware of the concept of a Trader, non-retail sale (except to another Trader) so I have learned something new today :)

Mark & Nick, thanks also for your contributions / clarifications. However, I hope it is clear that my question was not about your specific transaction which is, of course, entirely a private matter but general principles.

Hello Mark, I know I don't live in the UK, I know I didn't purchase my TR6 from you, I know we have never met, but, do you feel like you owe me some sort of warranty repair? In the future, if it becomes necessary, of course. I think it is only like a 6 hr. flight to the USA, and I could loan you my tools for a small fee. Cheers, Gene

There speaks a man who presumably never started his motoring life frequenting the backstreet car lots. :P

Even the main dealers have always been prepared to sell a part-exhanged vehicle to the public as a 'trade sale' = 'what you see is what you get'. That means kick the tyres, take it for a run, crawl underneath it, but when cash changes hands, it (i.e. the car and any associated problems) is all yours. These cars can vary from cheap old bangers needing major work to reasonable cars which are less popular and would hence hang around on the forecourt tying up cash, or going to auction. Bargains are available, but very much a case for caveat emptor.

So here is the update from my side.....

Nick's Fuel pump (good old Lucas) was leaking slightly and only pushing out circa 95 - 100 PSI.....on a good day...

This had also (we suspect) let air into the injection system and injectore number 3 was not pulsing or spraying fuel - hence lumpy running and the odd back-fire!

Fuel Pump swapped for a decent second hand one and valve on the metering unit also changed - just in case!

Now purring like a kitten and bloody quick for a CR car - DO NOT RACE A YELLOW TR6 WITH REG SMK 200M - unless you are Neil in my rather tasty old white TR5.........

We also dropped the oil for Nick and swapped the scabby throttle cable......his sunvisors also stay up now thanks to some shiny new clips....

;)
