Hi all , a friends tr6 been standing some time but he's decided to get it up and running ,but it's not firing only 5 volts on the tester at the points, any advice would be most welcome ,

Hi Nick,

as Menno points out - what is the battery voltage.

 

With the engine not turning over and the points open you should get 12V on both sides of the coil (SW & CB).

With the CB closed you will get 12V on the battery/Switch side and 0V on the CB side (as they are grounded)

 

With the engine turning over you should still get 12V on the Battery side of the coil but the CB side will shuffle up and down between 12V and 0V.

With a simple meter you will get so sort of 'average' reading - you really need a scope to see the true volts.

 

However being a TR6 it may have a ballast resistor wire leading to the coil to improve starting (it may have an 8V coil fitted)

Therefore with the enigne running look for appr 8V on the battery side of the coil and something less on the CB side (it will be bobbing upo and down as before)

Be aware that alternators (unlike dynamos) are not tolerant of flat batteries!

If the battery voltage is low, then connect it to a battery charger and get it fully charged before doing further testing - you don't want to cook the alternator.
