Cost of gearbox change to overdrive

Recommended Posts

Hi after looking for a while for a nice tr4 I have found one I like but its not fitted with an overdrive gearbox something that was high up on my list of wants. So my question is how much would it roughly likely cost to change the gearbox for an overdrive type with all of the associated wiring? I'm looking at just giving the car to a specialist to carry out the work and assuming all parts are available of the shelf... Or am I being delusional?

Advice appreciated regards Richard

Hi Rich

it may be worth talking to whoever you think will do the fitting.

It would be north of £2K

You could get an unknown GB&OD for  £500+ then spend £500 to overhaul each item  = +£1500

Fitting  £500+

Speak to Tom Cox - this is what he does

As comments above an overhauled gearbox alone is going to be around £2000 then clutch/ associated wiring/ switches and labour on top so nudging £3000 ish

Just in case you don't know, the gearbox mainshaft has to be changed to a shorter one, which means a complete gearbox strip down.

Thanks guys for your input. I looked on Pete Cox website and can see rebuild costs. I think I have enough info for the moment to make a decision

Thanks again for prompt replies Richard

I bought a A type overdrive gearbox and all the associated bits and pieces off Tom Cox for my 4a. Highly recommended.

Thanks Richard however the car I was interested in was at auction and I didn't bid enough to win it. The search continues
