HI TORQUE STARTER

Recommended Posts

I have a hitorque starter for my TR6 bought from our local Triumph specialist last year. It replaced the original starter which had damaged the ring gear. The new starter recently started to occasionally not mesh properly on the ring gear.

There were other issues so I decided to take the gearbox out to install a new clutch, a newly rebuilt gearbox and new ring gear. I also replaced the pinion on the starter.

One start in 10 or so the hi torque starter is not engaging the ring gear and grinds, as it was doing before. These starters are supposed to engage the ring gear first and then start turning. It appears this one is occasionally turning the pinion before it engages on the ring gear.

It only happens occasionally and most of the time it works fine.

At the specialist's suggestion I rang the starter suppliers who could only say the starter pinion might not be set up correctly for the ring gear. As it worked fine for a year this is not likely. He did say that any restriction in current to the starter might cause a problem.

I will replace the starter lead but has anyone else had a similar problem with their hitorque starter?

how about fitting a spacer between the SM ad GB

I think that may make the problem worse Roger.   Power is switched to the motor towards the end of the pinion travel by the internal contacts.  If it is already switched on too soon, before the pinion has meshed,  spacing the motor will make it start even sooner.

I wonder whether in this case something has happened to the the contacts  so that sometimes they close too soon?

First thing to check is battery and connectors

That's been my experience with a high torque starter on my 2.5 litre GT6. If battery connections are less than perfect, the starter clicks or fails to engage properly.

As Nigel, I have found that high torque starter motors are very sensitive to switching current and they need a very good earth. Paint on the engine back plate where the motor is mounted will cause problems. I have an earth strap that goes from one of the mounting bolts back to the earth point on the bulk head so that there is a direct earth back to the battery. No problems since!

Bruce.

Thank you all.

The spacing between the ring gear and pinion is in specs (2.0-2.5mm) at 2.5mm.

I checked my records and the starter is still under warranty (bought 9 Nov 22). It is back with the manufacturer.
