Well that isn't a very welcoming post for a 'newbie' is it Rog ?   Not everyone is a whizz mechanic and we all had to start to learn at some time.

Welcome to the forums Trevor.   There are local TR Register groups around the country and it would be worth locating the group closest to you to ask advice as there may be someone who lives nearby and who can help you sort things out.  The details for the London group are available on the main site here: https://www.tr-register.co.uk/groups

You might consider joining the register too, if you have not been instantly put off ! ;)

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your car - have you owned it long ?

Just a thought Trevor, and something which is easy to check - are you sure the plug leads are connected in the right order?  It's easy to get them swapped if you have been working on the distributor.   The firing order is 1-3-4-2 and the distributor rotates anti-clockwise when viewed from the top.
