Rear Flasher Lamps

Recommended Posts

I am converting my TR3A to RHD and so have to change the rear flashing lamps from red to amber. I thought this would be a simple case of swapping one for the other and so purchased a couple of amber lamps from Moss (Pt#37H5520). When I have gone to fit them they are slightly fatter than the originals and so the rims (Pt#7H5182) don’t slip as far down and therefore don’t fit into the rubber body (Pt#508162).
Has anyone else experienced this? If I purchase new rims, nothing wrong with the originals, will that solve the problem or will I have to replace the rubber body too?

So frustrating!

Interesting conundrum

I have a few spare orange and other coloured lenses of both plastic and glass and have never experienced the issue you describe.   Are you replacing glass or plastic red lenses?   Are the replacement orange lenses of the same material?
If you want I can dig through my box of lamps and find some orange lenses and chrome rims that match.   The only issue will be the chromes will be lacking in lustre.

I do think someone has created stainless lens retainers.    Try the Classic Mini stockists.

Hi,

I have had problems with the lights. The new inits have the terminals that touch the bulb inside the shroud are cable turned over and not spring mounted and spot soldered, like the Lucas units L488 12v  box marked 52250.

Inside the new ones w, with the wrong terminals , the cables migrate to the edge and short out against the light casing. This overheats the cables which melt into a mess. I had to make a new loom for the boot and included a fuse which would save the wires if I had the same problem.  Many years later there is no problem again,

Careful what you buy and look for old stock

A route some of us have gone is to provide amber rear flashers combined with reversing lights using a LED bulb.  It requires bulbs lamp assy and a bit of wiring.

Lamp assembly (same as the one on the grille)  http://minispares.com/product/Classic/Electrics/Lamps/Indicators/1B9100.aspx?090905

Bulb https://www.classiccarleds.co.uk/products/bay15d-1157-white-and-amber-tail-sidelight-and-indicator-combined-led-380?_pos=1&_sid=8cdbeed30&_ss=r

Same can be done on the front with just the bulbs to provide amber flashers inside a clear lens that has a white side lamp.

Agree, but don't forget you will need an LED compatible flasher unit if you go this way.

This is the one I recommend:

(Select +ve or -ve earth)
