boxofbits
Rather belated perhaps as he died on Wednesday 31st August, but I was shocked to hear of the death of Bill Turnbull, the journalist and presenter, and thought he deserved a mention. Only 2 weeks ago this morning he re-appeared on his radio show on Classic FM, and was full of his light heart and humour. He did the show then spent the last week with his family, before succumbing to prostate cancer. What a thoroughly splendid, decent man. Pity we haven’t got more like him. Rest in Peace Bill. RogerH
I heard the news on Classic FM Thursday morning at 8am. The announcer was almost in tears by the end of the item. Roger
TorontoTim
Several broadcasters on Radio 4 were in a similar state at various points in the day, Roger. I saw him rarely, at least that I remember, but clearly he was as described, above.

RogerH
Bill was diagnosed with serious prostate cancer apprx 5 years ago. He underwent chemo etc which would take him away from his audience for weeks at a time. As mentioned above he returned last week for an 'encore' - he must have realised what was round the corner. A simple blood test, done annually, could have saved his life. One good thing that has come of this sad situation is that the number of PSA bloods tests have grown significantly in that 5 year period. Bill has saved so many lives. HSM
Diagnosed with prostate cancer 15 yrs ago after a routine blood test, 16 sessions of radio therapy & still here to tell the tail. Please all you men over 50 have an annual P.S.A. blood test. When caught early carcinoma of the prostrate is very treatable. Harvey

Roger Can’t agree more Roger and Harvey Apparently you cannot necessarily sense the onset of the disease. Didn’t Alvin Stardust die under those circumstances ? As Roger says let’s hope Bill’s death is not entirely in vain. Kevin

You do not fell anything until it is too late. The cancer cells grow and pass to other organs and bones Whereas treating the cancer on the Prostate & Pancreas is easy peasy trying to do the same in the large organs and bones is a very different ball game and usually fails. ALL MEN over 50, and over 40 if you have a family history, MUST MUST MUST have an annual PSA test. Roger
