Diagnosis of a slight whine while driving.

Recommended Posts

I am approaching 500 miles in my first TR rolling project.

I have a 1974 CR with just over 65k which appear to be genuine miles.

She runs well, clutch isn't too heavy, doesn't pull left or right either rolling or under breaking. All gears engage cleanly with the exception of 2nd when changing down under braking - occasionally sticky to engage.

I have noticed however, a slight whining noise which is present in all gears although it is less noticeable when O/D is engaged.

I've check both front wheels and I am fairly confident it is not a wheel bearing. It seems to be coming from the centre-front of the car so I don't think it is the differential, but that's as far as I've managed to get.

The gearbox was (according to the history file) removed and inspected in late 2016 and the clutch bearing carrier was replaced.

Prior to that in 2015 the gearbox and O/D were overhauled by a Triumph specialist and various parts replaced.

As far as I can tell it has only completed around 4k miles since that work was carried out.

Any ideas would be welcome.

Whining 1,2 &3 but disappears in 4th is usually the lay shaft and its bearings starting to fail. Although your gear box has been overhauled there has been years of bad layshafts being supplied into the TR market. I know of one case where there was a total failure within 400 miles of overhaul. Does your whining disappear in 4th? The Essex boys seem to have suffered most with this problem, My gearbox started to fail at 96K but was over 40 years old.

Bruce.

Depends on your definition of 'slight' it's an old car so you will hear more mechanical noises than in a modern car especially from the diff and gearbox, which you are sitting right next to.

At what speed can you hear it? Maybe get a ride in another car to see if it's normal.

DRD - I rode in the passenger seat with Dan driving this last week, and I confirm that this noise, whilst not overtly loud (and therefore possibly not too urgent) is not normal, as my CP version does not make this (which amongst the 1969 rattles is quite a bonus for me!).  I thought that it may have been front wheel bearings, or gearbox, but not the diff as it is not that type of whine or from the rear...

Perseverence, Dan - try greasing the fore and aft propshaft UJs to rule them out too...if you need to borrow the needle grease gun attachment give us a shout!

I was one of the people who had a gearbox fail shortly after rebuild. The issue was that a new mainsheet had not been used. Instead the worn bearing surfaces on the shaft were turned down and sleeves fitted. These were not up to the job and failed. Started with a whine and then total gearbox failure when I got home form a rbrr run. Now rebuilt with new mainshaft and has survived an rbrr and 10cr without any issues.
