Z320
Hi there, I will take the diff out to shim it new, it has about 7° play. A experienced friend will help me, the differential flange holding tool I want to make myself. Any advice is welcome about how long I have to make the lever (is 50 cm enough?) and how solid the steel should be (40 x 5 mm ?) Ciao, Marco
ed_h
Marco-- I used a piece of shop scrap, I think around 18 inches long (not far from 50 cm). You can judge the other dimensions from the picture. It was plenty strong, and something quite a bit smaller would have worked fine. Ed
Z320
Hi Ed, thank you for the dimensions and photo. Your tool has a „hook“ on the far side, is this by accident or can it be used for something? Ciao, Marco
Ian Vincent
If you have s access to the TR Technicalities CD there is a very useful section on overhauling a differential in there. Rgds Ian

RogerH
Hi Marco, I made the same tool a number of years ago to remove/fit the nuts on the wire wheel adaptor ( apprx 500mm x 40mm x 5mm) A few months ago I put holes in the other end of the handle to help remove the rear flange on a gear box. jerrytr5
Why do your homemade tools look so much better than mine Roger? All that money British Airways spent on you clearly didn't go to waste. Jerry

No, that piece was just a re-purposed from something else. I don't remember what thst hook was for. Sort of looks intentional though, doesn't it? Ed
Z320
Indeed, it looks very mysterious. I make it as simple as possible, this was also your intention. Thank you all, and thank you John, the Churchill tool shure is lovely, but to much effort for my one or two times use.

Roger Roger, Seeing your photos of this tool reminded me of the special tool that I have for the same job....It's a piece of wood cut to length to jam between the seat quab and the brake pedal and apply the brakes so that I can undo the nuts - took me about 10 minutes to make and doubles up as a brake bleeding accessory to hold the brake pedal down. Rgds Ian Whatever floats your boat. Had I thought of a piece of wood at the time I may well have gone that way. Roger
