Relay In Ignition Circuit

Recommended Posts

I'm revamping the wiring on my TR3 which suffers from a singular lack of fuses and relays and have a question for the auto electrical guys out there:

I've fitted a 10 way fuse box in the engine bay to feed the ignition switched circuits and reduce the loads going through the ignition switch. A relay energised by the ignition switch controls the input.

Should I run the HT coil supply direct from the ignition switch to minimise the potential failure modes or run it from one of the outputs on the new fuse box?

.......or have I already answered my own question?

Yes you have answered yourself. The load presented by the coil is very small so doesn't stress the ignition switch. It really isn't worth adding to potential points of failure by running it from a relay in my opinion.

Except if you fit a relay you can link that to a hidden switch. I found a very good article on how to create a basic immobiliser using a relay, a magnetic switch and a button switch.

If you’d like a copy pm me with your email address.
