Engine guru needed.

Recommended Posts

Sorry not tr related.

Recently had a few issues with daily driver, mainly running bit lumpy , mis fire when starting .but clears when warm although seems a little less responsive

A local mechanic said it could be glowplugs.

So I decided to change all 6. Having stripped air manifold off to access glowplugs 1 of the air intakes completely dry, all the others oily .

I am thinking this could be warning signs of burnt valves.

Easter Sunday is not a good day to start messing with engines????.

Put camera down inlets valve very clean all others lots of carbon

Thoughts gratefully received Mark.

Which car or which engine might help, Mark.

Presume diesel ("glowplugs")?

Difficult to see how "burnt valves" could contaminate the air intake with oil, or how oil gets in to the intake - unless there is a turbocharger, common on diesels.

A failed oil seal on the bearings in that could cause this.

Can you trace the oil trail back up the intake tract to find where it's coming from?

Sticking EGR valve can foul the inlet ports and mess up running:

Try a cleaner ??

Good idea, (of course!) Peter!

Compression test tests piston rings, inlet, exhaust valves, none of which can cause this.

If you have an OBD (On Board Diagnosis) reader, this might show P0401, which would pinpoint an EGR fault.

Garages have expensive ones, but there are apps to run on your smart phone.

Clean and probably replace the EGR valve, replace the secondary internal air filter (as well as the main external air filter), remove and clean the inlet manifold. Check swirl flaps.

Not a 5 minute job, been there done that on Panzer years ago, and it was the result of inadequate servicing by the previous owner.

Cheers

Some mechanic......glow plugs indeed!

Injector? Not spraying correctly..... can and do get partially blocked.

Certainly hope it doesn't have swirl vanes..... a well known weakness of BMW engines... they're not the most robust at the best of times.

If it is one of those motors with swirl flaps get shot of them and replace with blanks. There's a company in Kent that supplies them, there are two different sizes. They send you both sets and you return the ones not needed.

Whole job takes about 1-1.5 hours.
