TR4 Oil Pressure adjuster on Oil Filter Housing

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

Still trying to solve my low oil pressure problem.

Does anyone know where I can find a detailed drawing of how the ball bearing and spring should be positioned in the Oil Pressure adjuster on the Oil Filter Housing on the TR4?

Also, how far in should the screw be screwed?

Can't seem to find the detail in the workshop manual.

Thanks for your help.

Dave.

I would also be interested to see a drawing of the assembled ball valve. The oil pressure on my 4A fluctuates between 50 and 70 psi at steady revs. Having replaced the ball and spring I'm going to remove the filter head (with screw on filter attachment) to see if anything appears amiss.

Hi CTC, sorry, I don't know your name.

That drawing is very helpful, thanks. Well, from the drawing I now see there are two springs and balls, which is helpful to know.

I can now get on with dismantling it and figure out what goes where and then do as you say and screw it in until it reaches the correct pressure.

Very helpful, thanks.

Dave if its knocking when its hot, its too late for the PRV adjustment.

I have never had to alter one on a TR in 40 years, but that doesn't mean someone hasn't been playing before you got it.

I have a spare unit if you need one.

Hi Alan

when I had this same issue on my 3A it turned out that there was air in the pipe to the back of the gauge and bleeding by slackening the nut on the back of the gauge with the engine running sorted it - I did wrap a cloth around it to stop stray oil flying around.

Hope it is as simple as that for you.

Cheers

Ian

Thanks Ian,

I'll give it a try and report back.

I think that drawing is a Purolator full-flow, there were Tecalemit types and the earlier cars had a purolator bypass design......best identify which one you have.

Still no luck finding the cause of this fluctuating oil pressure. I have replaced the pressure relief ball and spring and now bled the tube to gauge. Oil pump has been removed and checked. The filter head is a Tecalemit and the parts book shows an internal balance/blow off valve in addition to the relief valve. This also comprises of a ball and spring. I'm now wondering if this could be at fault. Anyone experienced problems with this valve and does it come apart ok with the filter head removed? It certainly never seems to get a mention.

Did you look at the Moss part catalogue?

The exploded drawing of the pressure relief valve gives a clear view of the assembly order. items 7/8/9/10

Sorry if I wasn't very clear, I meant that nobody ever seems to mention that the balance valve might be a problem and the spring and ball need replacement as with the relief valve.

My understanding is that the balance valve only opens if the filter is clogged.

Hence the addition of the item when the filter system went from bypass to full flow

Does this help?

PS Remember that modern spin-on type filter cartridges may have a bypass valve integrated in their construction so oil will flow to the oil galleries unfiltered if the filter becomes blocked.

6 cyl TR has a bypass arrangement set inside the original filter bowl - item 5

Yes that's as I understand it. So I guess the question is if the spring was fatigued or the ball not seating correctly could this cause the fluctuating oil pressure?
