grumpy2
starting to make my winter list and thinking now about seats. I currently have cloth MX5 seats that are very comfy but don't look too original. I've seen Paul somethings leather MX5 seats and they look terrific but at £425 plus postage are a tad expensive. in black with red piping these would look great in my TR I'm wondering about reupholstering my genuine seats with new foams and webbing but I'm a little confused. I've seen Paddocks do a foam kit for £90 plus £12.50 for the webbing. so thats about £250 all in, I'm local so no postage. Revington advertise a kit for £190 plus postage but don't say whats included, anyone with experience? I've remade Stag and MG seats in the past, anyone done TR6 seats have any pointers? Graze
Talk to Alan T - he has done the seats in his car. There is a thread on it somewhere Graze
Geko
It's pretty easy to make the MX5 seats look period if not original. Not sure if you've seen my last posts on the subject but the seats have undergone a complete pattern redesign matching the rest of the interior trim. The whole thing cost the equivalent of 140£ which would probably amount to 250£ in the UK. Edited October 20, 2014 by Geko
grumpy2
Wow they look great, how did you manage that? Gary
Geko
That's the thing, my upholstery guy is a bit of a diva so I had to give him carte blanche and trust him, the only thing for which I had a say was the two tone job. For the rest he replaced all the sponge with high density foam; designed the new seat pattern, stitching and piping. Workmanship is dirt cheap here though. You just have to find the artist, be in tune so he knows what you what and cross the fingers.

AlanT
There is a Youtube video on TR6 seats. I did 4A seats and early 6 seats are very similar. https://www.flickr.com/gp/90670218@N04/pAfF7G If you PM an email address I'll send a detailed write-up.
TR NIALL
Recovered Leather Seats for £400,I wouldn't of thought so.
grumpy2
Recovered Leather Seats for £400,I wouldn't of thought so. In what way? Please explain. Remember I'm a novice here
TR NIALL
You will need 1 full Hide to cover 1 Seat,Leather Hides ain't cheap. Now if were talking Imitation Leather I'm sure it can be done for 400ish,some Upholsters use both and only put Leather on the Seat Bolster and the Centre of the Back Rest all other parts are covered in Imitation. There are some good Imitation Materials out there but also some Bad,choose the Bad Option and you won't be to pleased, after a year or two the Seats will look ****. RobinTR6
Yep paid couple of hundred for a hide and contrasting pipeing and got mine done by a great trimmer, he's not quick tho. Cost all up done about £400 not including cost of seats (Ridguard seats ) here's a PIC http://s881.photobucket.com/user/rguojah_photos/media/TR6%20HUM%20146G/TR6postresto005.jpg.html?sort=3&o=
AlanT
Leather is a good bit harder to work than Vinyl. A 4A seat has quite an extreme shape and this is hrad to get smooth in leather. https://www.flickr.com/gp/90670218@N04/Z4t5A6 Vinyl is probably a bit harder wearing. Leather looks good and feels nice. Edited October 20, 2014 by AlanT
grumpy2
Interesting. Many users here have recommended Paul Bishop and have his seats in their cars. His price is £425. Are you suggesting then that they must be poor quality of imitation leather? Edited October 20, 2014 by grumpy2
TR NIALL
No I'm not suggesting that at all. I've seen Seats that Paul Bishop has Covered and I cannot fault them, but what Material he has used or uses you'll have to Ask him that Question,Leather,Synthetic or Both. Geko
Mine is top grade vinyl (smells like leather) and leather was only a tad more expensive. I choose that vinyl because of its resistance to climatic stress i.e. heat, sun, humidity and pollution. Not I that know anything abt viny but my 2009 MPV is a full leather 7 seater with both front seats already cracked because of the heat and UVs going through the windscreen. Just saying Edited October 21, 2014 by Geko

The problem with re-upholstering the originals is no amount of new foam and expensive covers will alter the fact that they'll still only reach half-way up your back with the head rests (if fitted) supporting your shoulder blades. I KNOW they're not original but my MX seats make the 6 a much nicer place to be. Mike
stuart
So called "Leather seats" usually have the front wearing faces done in leather and all the rest is done in Vinyl. Paul Bishop`s seats are nicely done and are virtually all leather and to be honest are good value certainly from the looks of all the ones I have seen. (Try checking the price of a set of foams/straps/covers/clips etc from Moss plus labour to fit a standard set of seats.) Stuart. harrytr5
I costed out my TR5 seats including everything including the trimmer and it came out around £900. I bought Paul Bishops seats including leather and white piping at half that cost.I have travelled thousands of miles in them and they are so comfortable.Got them in Jas and now also in Rooster the project TR5(this will be eventually sold when finished) Regards Harry
AlanT
One of the hard bits on the seats was the corners at the top of the central panel. These "pucker" and the solution is to make "bra-pads". An ordinary steel disc in an angle grinder does this. I am NOT joking. Here are before and after shots: https://www.flickr.com/gp/90670218@N04/01828f/
