Can anybody point me in the right direction ie supplier for good exhaust system ?

Had the bonnet open last night, started the car up and loads of exhaust fumes were coming from what appears to be the joint between the manifold and the rest of the exhaust.

Currently a Sports exhaust system with a stainless manifold .

The heat this thing creates is unbelievable and looks like one of the causes of my excess heat problem.

I don't like this system at all. Too noisy and smelly. I would like to return to a standard system.i.e. the one it came with.

So I ''m looking at a standard system and new manifold to match.

Am I looking at a cast iron manifold with a stainless exhaust ?

Or ... Have the whole thing in stainless ?

Over to you .......!!!!

Ps

CC chassis, twin hs6.1971.

Is it a good idea to wrap the manifold if I go stainless ?

Hi steve, i have a cast iron manifold with a standard stainless system, which is my preference,

Very original apart from the stainless, but you can fit plain, and the cast manifold is as good as any,

Have fun ,

Conrad.

I'm with Conrad, standard manifold and stainless exhaust as copied from standard system. You can pick up a cast manifold for 20/30 quid or less, they are heavy so cost a fair bit to post. The stainless systems come from all the specialists so see what experience people gave with the Tr shop, TRGB, moss, Tr trader etc.

I agree with the others S/S exhaust (Mine was from Rimmers) on cast manifold, gives you the right sound for a TR6 as well.

Had a branch manifold on, took it off and put the cast manifold back on, no difference in performance could be felt on normal driving.

I'm on carbs as well.

All that, because of; Leak between manifold and downpipe, Excess heat, Noise and Smell?

1/ If there is a leak, fix it! New gasket, bit of sealant to help. Make sure the pipework behind is well secured and not stressing the joint. Jobs a good'un!

2/ Heat. So many peeps complain of excess heat. I made a car (Silverback, Race Vitesse, TR6 engine, 631 tubular manifold, dual straight through silencers) with the radiator in the back (aero experiment). It was a really COLD car to drive. The exhaust contribute svery, very little to the heat under the bonnet, almost all of which comes from the radiator. I don'trecommend repeating the experiment, but no need to worry about heat from the exhaust. Far better to pay attention to sealing the gerabox cover to the floor, and to sealing of all the many holes in the bulkhead, They originally had rubber grommets, most of which wil be missing, all of which will be perished.

3/ Noise. See 2/ A TR should leave its noise behind!!

4/ Smell see 1/

Good luck!

John

Steve

It sounds as if you have a similar replacement system to the one that came with my '6 and I'm with John's comment above.

I too have a stainless steel manifold and it leaked fumes like a rusty tub until i had a man with a blow torch look at it. He refitted the whole system and ensured that the three sections of each of the twin pipes were seated and sealed correctly. He extended the tail pipe to overcome the kamm effect and the net effect was to signicantly reduce fume leakage and cabin penetration.

However, if you have the system with in-line silencers, rather than the original transverse box, I wonder if you also have the problem of the boxes being too low - I am forever knocking them on sleeping policemen and the bottom of the ramp up from my basement parking... I was under the car yesterday and My Man pointed out that with some adaptation of the off-the-shelf system, the boxes can sit much higher under the boot and thus reduce the probability that I will one day wear a hole in them. It's just a question of whether going back to the original system isn't simply a better guarantee of success...

Cheers

Paul

Can't get much hotter & humid where I am (SW Florida), but I have not had any heat issues related to 3 year old SS header and muffler system purchased from Rimmer's. Spent some time carefully wrapping the pipes just past the run ulnder the gearbox. No leaks either. Love the system on my modestly modified US rebuild. Going to try to post an image or two.

I have installed a heat shield under the carbs and that might deflect some heat from carb float bowls, but overall do not feel any under bonnet heat increase of note.
